ahh, now that weve got that clear, lets talk about wheel offset. i dunno anything about it- except that common ones are 40, 43, and 45. which is best for our cars? consider tire rubbing and a flush-to-body fit

I read a thread on here, I think last week, and most of the senior members were saying 45 is the best offset, to avoid rubbing and still keep fender clearance on lowered cars. I'm too lazy to do a search, but I think it was in "Wheels and Tires" forum.

It depends on the width of the rim too.

Actually... For the offset it depends on the width of the wheel and tire. Certain width wheels can accept certain width tires. My wheels are 17x7 and the largest width of tire that they can accept is 215. The offset happens to be 45 and in front that is perfect. No rubbing of any kind and I have a ton of room inside, so I could actually fit something like a 225 with a 40 offset. The smaller the offset, the more the whole wheel sits inside the fender. The larger the offset the larger the wheelbase. For my wheels, and stock ride height the rear can't get any bigger in width. That's why I'm making custom rear lower control arms. You've got it backwards... The lower the offset number, the closer the mounting surface is to the centerline of the wheel, thus pushing the outer edge further out. Larger offsets pull wheels further into the fender since the mounting surface is farther outside of the rim centerline. It also does depend on the width of the rim how far they'll stick out. You can probably go down as far as 38 or so with a 7" rim and still not have them sticking out.
The way you have it explained works for negative offsets.... but we've got positive offsets.
