Front brake cooling using air ducts
Has anyone ever seen a Le Mans LMP race car without the body shell on? In the front (as well as in the rear), I noticed they have rather large air ducts that direct air from the front mounted center intake to the front brakes. These pictures illustrates what I am referring to:

Now, I for some reason got the idea that perhaps this would be something one could do to our cars, however I am assuming that it would serve no real performance enhancing purpose. Am I correct, or could this type of modification perhaps increase braking ability with the use of better brake rotors and pads?

Hmm, I searched for all threads referencing 'brake' in both current and archived messages and saw nothing like what you are talking about. However, I do remember hearing something about Grey doing some DIY to cool the brakes off. Hopefully he replies to this with something about it.

I guess any kind of air ducting couldn't hurt, but I think in order for some type of brake duct cooling to work, you would have to be going at high speeds constantly. I think that regular city driving with spurts of hard driving around town wouldn't help much, because the amount of air being directed to the brake rotors would most likely be minimal. This is just my 2¢ and by no means am I saying that it would "never" work, just that it might not be very efficaint.

Yeah, that definately works. Although with our cars that sort of brake ducting is hard to do since you'de have to have the make the ducts flexible. The wheel turning angle is huge, so the flexibility of the duct would be unimaginable. It would have to make an angle of something like 135 degrees. Plus our suspension design doesn't exactly lend itself to this sort of thing.
My design is a little different. Here's the thread: New Product Under Development: Need Tester
These things exist though, the NSX has them, the Viper has them. They cool the brakes down during high speed braking. Cooler brakes brake better, so it's important to not have them overheat. Anyway, I'm still hammering out the final design. There's some pictures in that thread at the bottom, but it's not going to look like that. It'll be a little different. More bends and cuts, and a different mounting method.

You can make a set of ducts if you don't have foglights by drilling the hole out for a speaker/subwoofer tube (the rolled end port thing) and some pool hose.

Like with most things there is a possible down side to brake ducts.
If you are using a brake pad that requires some heat to work best (Example EBC Redstuff, there are others) By using brake ducts to cool the rotor/pad you could be cooling the brakes too much during normal driving, causing slightly worse braking.

It was a piece of aluminum tied up to the lower control arm that stuck down below the car to move air up to the brakes. I wasn't 100% happy with the design though. I'm going to change it and maybe make a workable one sometime though.
Its a celebration bitches!

or you can jjust get slightly better rims with lots of room inbetween the spokes so air can pass threw them...
o yea, and the air ducts for the DC5 use the stock fog light locations. so since maby the DC5 sell might be simular to ours, it might work.
when i installed my injen intake, it looks like there will be good room to make a duct from the foglight holes to the side of inner firewall. i woiuld try this but i don't have the time and i think it wouldl be a waste of time, since most pads work optimal at higher temperatures. and with my rims, i believe they are getting cooled down enough. but thats just mee.....

cool idea grey. I'm gonna try and do a ducting style setup and see if i can get it to flex like I want. I'll put anything that I come up with on here. No hurry though so dont wait for it.
