New tires, which to get?
So I'm getting new tires and can't decide weather to get all-season tires, winter tires or what. I wanted Yokahama Avid H4s, but I'm about to make a trip across the country and need something that can deal well in the snow. The size I'm getting in 185/70/14. Any advise? I'm going to be living in New England so I have a long winter ahead of me. Thanks.
Well, you're driving across the country, so don't get winter tires. They have a low speed rating....not all that great for anything but winter weather. The Avid H4 is a good all season tire. Dunlop sp sport and Michelin Harmony or Destiny is good. Another good tire are the Bridgestone Potenza's, which there are several to pick from. If you're not real performance oriented, get a "performance all season" as opposed to high or ultra high all season performance. You'll get longer treadlife this way, and better snow traction.

If they make Sumitomo HTR+ in your size, I would highly recommend them. Great handling wet, dry and snow. I have gotten to experience each wihtin the last three months on some 215/45/17 and they are awesome! And, relatively inexpensive if you get them from Tirerack.
