To all those who want to buy new rims/wheels (wheel vibration woes)

Cursed wheelmax sold my tires/wheels without giving me centering rings. These are absolutely essential, unless your rims are specifically made for the civic hub center.

The center hole for a wheel has to be a tight fit for most brands of wheels, because the holes for the bolts aren't precise enough for a tight fit. If you don't have a centering ring for your rims, your wheels and steering wheel will vibrate like crazy at high speeds. This is regardless of whether or not your tires are properly balanced.

Internet wheel retailers have a tendency to overlook this, either because they're lazy or because they don't know much about what they're selling. Be SURE to ask before you buy your wheels whether or not they require a centering ring for your civic. Because if they do, you need to order it from a place that sells the wheel ...tire places will not have the right fit ring for you because each center hole is different for different rims (in my case I was extremely lucky and the shop did have the right one).

I searched threads and nobody really explained this to me in detail.

that is true. when i had my 17's before, by steering wheel used to vibrate like crazy when i went on the freeway. now when i got my new 18's, they came with the center rings and this fixed the problem. if anyone out there has this problem, chances are you need the center rings too.

not center caps, hub rings... they usually dont come with the rim but ya the place you buy the wheels from should give them to you, after all your spending $1000.

If you got the hub rings and it still vibrates, you need to get your tires match-mounted to the rim. This virtually eliminated my vibration at 60mph!

Could vibrations be caused by improperly torqued wheels also?

I got a good deal on some rims, and now i need centering rings. Does any one know the size of the hub on a 2001 Coupe DX (Canadian)?? ( I know I'll have to find the size of the rim's hub hole from the manufacturer).

Only the manufacturer of the rims, or a place you can get the rims from can supply you with the centering rings. As for what they look like, they look like a plain metal ring, like a flat donut. The ring goes in between the rim and the brake hub. So before you put on the rim, you put on the ring. It eliminates the gap in the center hole.

Yes it can...its weird, but with aftermarket rims everything has to be perfect despite all the abuse they go thru..if one thing is off ever so slightly, you will get vibrations...make sure the wheels are torqued properly, air pressure is 30 like the placard says, wheels are balanced and things should be okay...there may be some element of vibration, but the worst will be gone...

Ugg yeah this is my worst nightmare its one of the main reasons I don't want a set of aftermarket rims, and if I do I would rather have local. So I could yell at them if they start vibrating, and the local shop told me bring in a quote and they will try their best to beat it. Rims do look really good though

ya i didnt know buying rims was such a pain in the butt, i got my rims and took it to the shop like 5 times to get it fixed... he gave up and gave me $20 to take it elsewhere. got it rebalanced and it was fine, well untill the next day when i slammed on my brakes and skidded for 5 secs and now it shakes again... but ya most vibrations are due to hub rings and improper balancing. i doubt the torque on the lug nuts will do anything tho, just as long as its tight enough.
