what size tires are best on 18's

i drive fast and aggressive and i need tires that will last and also i don't need to always be worrying about bending my rims what size tire should i get and type....i'm not planning on lowering it either so what ecer i get needs to not be too thick so i don't look like a 4x4 driving down the street.....

i was gonna say 215/35 but since you're not gonna lower it, then i'll agree with BiGDoG and go with 215/40

4x4 driving down the street?

With 18"s you gonna look like a 4x4 no matter how thin the rubber, unless of course, you drop the car. Besides, what's wrong with looking like a 4x4? The thought of that seems cool to me.

Dude, 40's are still not thick enough. You will scuff the rim if you hit a pothole and you might even dent it if you're driving fast. If the pothole is deep you can almost garuantee that your rims will be bent. I've already bent one set of rims and scuffed another on 205/40/17. But hey, go ahead and try them and find out for yourself if you don't believe me.

I am riding on 225-40 tires and they're great for everyday driving. It feels a lot better than the 35. Anything bigger on an 18 will looked to damn big.

ya 225-40 is as big as i would go. i went with 215-40 cause i was afraid of cracking the rims. and might want to look into falken 512s(not too many companies make 215-40-18) i got that with a 30,000 mile warranty.

rijowysock,

your stock tire height is 24.47" tall. in order to keep a correct speedo reading and to keep your gearing the same you need to stay within .5" of your stock tire height. shorter tires will give you better low end and taller tires will give you longer gears and a better top end. here are some tire heights for you.

185/65/15=24.47"
215/45/17=24.61"
215/35/18=23.92"
215/40/18=24.77"
225/35/18=24.20"
225/40/18=25.10"

any of these will work but it is up to you on which size to run. do you drag race?, canyon carve?, road race?, autocross?
how wide is your wheel?

if it were up to me I would run a 7.5" wide wheel and use the 225/35/18 ("wider is better" for my driving style.) must have the correct offset for this!

BTW the series of a tire ie... /35/ or /40/ this is an aspect ratio. so for a 205/40/17 the tire from one side where the tire touches the rim to the other side is 205mm(not just the tread width), the 40 means 40% of 205 is the side wall so 40% of 205 is 123mm divided by two sidewalls (one on each side) and you get 61.5mm so as the wheel gets wider and the "aspect ratio" stays the same the side wall actually gets taller because 40% of 225mm is more than 40% of 205mm.

just food for thought. let me know if there are any more questions.

Thanks,

ya i would have gone with 225-35 but i think its even more rare then 215-40. plus it also costs more and my rim width is only 7" not 7.5". i also think that its better to have a bigger wheel then stock so that you'll have lesser actual miles compared to having smaller wheel and more actual miles... i'm not even sure how much more it is but this is just the way i think...

to each his own. I'm here to educate so that people can make good decisions about product they want to buy. that was a very good point about the mileage by the way. that is why I run 19" wheels and oversized tires on the street and 17" wheels with undersized Hoosiers at autocross. thanks for replying.

eh.. i either recommend 215-40 or 225-35. 215-35 is too thin for me and 225-40 is too big. 215-40 is a lil on the big side but i'm afraid 225-35 is going to rub with my neuspeed sports.

Hey,

If you want to try a pretty new tire the Dunlop FM901 is a good bang for your buck tire. they are only a 200 A A rating which means they wont last super long but I like them!

I just picked up some Parada Spec 2 (215/40/18). They've got a 300 AA rating which seems pretty good for a high performance low-pro tire. These are going to wrap a brand new set of 18" Centerline RPM's (only 14.5 lbs each).

YEAH BABY!

18" Centerline RPM (Polished): Purchased at Les Schwab for $280 each.
Yokohama Parada Spec II (215/40/18): Purchased at Discount Tire for $145 each.

I would have purchased the RPM's in Silver but I did not want to wait the 6 to 8 weeks for them to come off of backorder.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Terry
