Time for tires
Time for tires
Haven't posted since my head gasket gave up the ghost, you folks were a great help and inspiration (thanks ezone). The Civic has gone about 30K since then and getting ready to put tires on it. Potenza 019 Grids now they're OK though noisier than the Winterforce snows. Looking at Potenza RE960AS or Yokohama AVID ENVigor both have good numbers at Tirerack with the Potenza nudging ahead in the noise dept. Any folks familiar with either and or is there a quieter tire. Getting old and noise is a priority and get off my lawn ;-)

Re: Time for tires
I'm familiar with the Potenza RE970AS (probably very similar to the 960)
In fact, I'm actually a huge fan of Bridgestone tires.
The ones I have are awesome. Very responsive, good on wet and dry roads, very quiet, look cool, and are very strong. The side walls are steel reinforced for limited flex and puncture protection.
I highly highly recommend the Potenzas.
I will be buying these again and again for my cars.

Re: Time for tires
My recommendation would be for General altimax RT or General Altimax HP. There is a $50 rebate going on it right now, i bought 185/65/15 for under $270 before Rebates from tiredirect.
Potenza's have been problematic on my 03 civic forever. especially g019.

Re: Time for tires
look into fallen. the SN211 are a great and quiet touring tire. they get a ridiculous wear rating and last forever. they are also very very sticky as hell.... and i am comparing them to my DOT race tire (falken azenis RT-615k). their handling properties are also very predictable.
if you have a little more money to spare, look into the falken azenis PT-722. they are a high performance luxury tire.
the SN211 are the best all around tire ive ever had. the next thing that comes close is the falken 912.
ive had:
falken azenis rt-615 and rt-615k
falken SN211
falken 912
nitto nittogen (absolute crap imo)
bridgestone potenza (i forgot exact one, it came with the car)

Re: Time for tires
also keep in mind when people are recommending you tires that they are also very limited to their knowledge of whats out there because they havnt exactly tried it. they can just give you their opinion on the tire that they have had.... and many times, they think their tire is so damn good but they just dont know there are much much better out there (it comes with a price tho).
Re: Time for tires
Look at reviews and ratings on tire rack.
I chose good dry traction, good wet traction (and crazy good hydroplaning resistance) and half decent snow/ice traction. Continental Extreme Contact DWS scores well in the extreme/ultra all season charts.
The sidewalls are a bit soft but it's not a big deal. Road noise is pretty loud for the 1st 5Kmiles but then quiets down a bit I think. It's a performance tire with compromises to be a true all-season imo.

Re: Time for tires
I do read the reviews at Tirerack, 1010Tires and Consumer Report. The Potenza Grid019 that came with it were/are OK but are just way too loud. Do like the look of the General Altimax HP and it gets mostly good reviews. My wife had Continental ContiTracs on her Mariner and they were a poor excuse for a tire, our pitbull didn't even want to chew on them. Odd because the sport attacks on my 919 are outstanding . Would be nice if Gingerman had a come test out some tires on your car day in conjunction with Tire rack.
General Altimax HP
Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS
Yokohama Avid ENVigor
Are the top 3 considerations right now, I'm fickle though or as my kids say ' you're old timers is kicking in'.

Re: Time for tires
more reinforcement for the Potenzas.

I've only been driving for 4 years, but they're the best tires I've epxerienced.
Before I had Michelins (Don't remember the model, but I hated 'em) and even worse before that, Riken Raptors...

Re: Time for tires
thanks for the input folks, now I'm less sure than before ;-) This one has caught my eye as the factory includes road hazard.

The Potenza RE970A does not come in 15inch and I'm not about to buy a set of wheels.
Anyone have personal experience with the 970 vs the 960?

Re: Time for tires
I think the 960 and 970 are basically the same, but they're a different range of sizes.
The description is nearly identical for both tires on TireRack
I was just using the 970 as an example becasue I'm most familiar with them

Re: Time for tires
They're on the car and at 60mph they're about 3-4dB quieter than the Potenza Grid 019's. They're not only quieter the sound they do make is nowhere near as annoying particularly the last say 50 feet whilst stopping, the others kept making me thing I had wheel bearing or brake pad issues. The bump signature is also far more civilized than the 019's. Since they are 65 series and not 60's at 70mph indicated I'm going just shy of 73. So far so good.
