my tires need to be changed , am thinking of going bigger or wider but i dont know what to choose

i have a 2005 sedan , and am thinking of a 2 inch drop, will either of those tires affect preformance ?? or ride comfort ??

Re: 215/45 zr17 vs 225/40 zr17 ??

those two tires are pretty much the same as each other...but a lot of dynamic variables go into each tire...

the pros of 215/40/17:
-lower profile = less-er tire wall flex = better handling/cornering
-215/40 tire will be lighter than the 215/45. usually about 3-5lbs lighter. this means your car will respond slightly better (and i can confirm this). remember, every pound of dynamic weight is equivalent to 3 pounds of static weight.

the cons of 215/40/17
it is slightly smaller than OEM speedo ration. 1.8% faster to be exact. this means when your speedo says 60mph, you are actually going 58.9 mph.

the pros of 215/45/17
-you get a little bit more tirewall, so it'll help with the ride comfort. but remember, this factor is negligible. you wont feel a difference in real life.
-you will get a bigger contact patch compared to the 215/40. this is due to the extra sidewall that allows for more of the "215" to touch the ground.
-this size is slightly larger than oem size. 1.7% too big to be exact. so when your speedo says ur going 60mph, you are actually going 61
-you will also find more tires in this size than the other. this is a more common size.

cons of 215/45/17
-its a bit heaver, which will make your car a little more sluggish. most people wont feel it, especially if u have an automatic. i have a manual in my car and i am very sensitive to every bit of change in my car.

Re: 215/45 zr17 vs 225/40 zr17 ??

and remember tire construction differs from manufacture to manufacture (as far as actual size goes.

a falken azenis 615k 215/45/17 (semi slick street/race competition tire) is different than a dunlop all season 215/45/17 tire....

Re: 215/45 zr17 vs 225/40 zr17 ??

i am currently running falken azenis 615k in 215/45/17.

the tire profile is pretty thin (aka thin side wall). if you live in an area that has lots of uneven pavement, i can see a problem with it.

if i had to recommend you a tire size (this is prob the only real answer you were looking for), i would recomend the 215/45/17.

why? because there are a lot more pro's of the 215/45 over the 215/40.

bigger contact patch, better shock absorption, and a good amount of sidewall aka "meat" on the tire. the 215/40 in my opinion is a little on the small side.

225 - potentially will rub or fenders or suspension components, depending on wheel off-set. again, potentially, same 225 could have different dimensions depending on tire model/size/manufacturer, but still whithin TRA standards.

to my defense, i was prob drunk as funk. lol

i wouldnt do 225/40 will be real heavy and you are better off spending money on a 215 tire that is nice and sticky.

1. lighter tire than the 225
2. stickery

remember that just beacuse its a 225 doesnt mean it has a bigger contact patch.

a race/sticky orientated (like the falken azenis 615k) has more "contact patch" in the 215 width than a "all season" 225. just something else to consider. just something to consider.

is there any reason why you'd want to go 225/40/17? that tire size is kind hard to find as well...you will have a very very limited selection with that specific size (another thing to consider)

Lol, no prob with that.
But yea i jus switched up my wheels last week. Got some 17x7.5
Car feels a bit better. Wasn't bad before, just had a bit of gap with my 16x8 due to the fact i couldn't lower my car anymore due to rubbing probs of my 3" exhaust. Now i just gotta roll my fenders some more. Possibly even pull them a bit.

And i think it's time to update my signature. Haven't been on in over a yr.

Re: 215/45 zr17 vs 225/40 zr17 ??

thanks guys ! i am getting the 215/45 ZR17s next week i had a lot of wheel spinning with the old (215/45s) thats why am going bigger .

should i roll my fenders ? esp that my car is dropped around 2 inches ??
and should i be afraid of fender rubbing with the 215/45s ?

Re: 215/45 zr17 vs 225/40 zr17 ??

you might rub with the 215 but it depends on your wheels and the offset.

i have mine rolled and i barely clear the rear and i am dropped close to 4"

it never hurts to roll your fenders and i would suggest it.

Re: 215/45 zr17 vs 225/40 zr17 ??

as for me, i DID rub with 215/50/16 tires. then i rolled it. then i didnt have a problem. then when i put on my 215/40/17, i didnt have a problem either.

215/45R17 Yokohama AS530....great tire in this size. 500 treadwear AA traction and A temperature. Semi-agreesive asymetrical tread pattern, great all weather, all season handling. I would stay away from the Falken's...they tend to seperate and wear terribly even with good alignment and keeping up on rotations and balancing. Good Luck!

Re: 215/45 zr17 vs 225/40 zr17 ??

ive ridden on the Yokohama AS530 on a few TSX with similar tire size... and they weren't impressive to say the least....there are also plenty of reviews on acurazine that confirms they suck. nothing personal.
