Re: brake whine

yea, u have a little metal rod on ur brake pads...when ur brake pads are almost all worn out, it scratches the rotor making a whining noise.

if u hear that means u need to replace ur brake PADs ASAP.

Re: brake whine

Not always, it depends to what point they are worn, if you hear it all the time your pad are gone and you basically metal on metal all the time. Easiest thing to do it just replace them, only takes about an hour at most.

Re: brake whine

Hi Guys,
I have looked on the website for my problem with brake whining but have gotten various responses. My brakes whine when i have parked my car outside in the cold/rain for a long period of time. It continues for the first 3-5mins when i drive and as they heat up it goes away. I know there could be rust build up which is causing them to do this. My question about the whining is that by cleaning my rear brakes will it go away or do i need to replace the shoes?

You need to check the pads, if they are really low, i think like 1/8" then you need new ones, The noise you hear after it sitting is the rust build up and as your pads clean the surface of the rotor it goes away, you can try to clean them as you mentioned and see if it works but I would still check your pads to determine if they need to be replaced.

Re: brake whine

So the squealing is coming from the front end disc brakes, not the rear drums?
After puttin on new pads the squealing will still occur in cold/rainy weather? Is there a way of preventing this?

Thaanks for the reply.

Re: brake whine

Are you sure it is from the rear brakes? If it is then you might need to take the drum off and look inside, could be a build of dust or something along that line...best thing to do is just inspect them all. Squealing is not normal, but you said you leave it parked for a long period of time which would cause build up on the rotors, only takes a few days for surface rust to form, but with drum brakes you will have to look inside.

Re: brake whine

It sounds like its from the rear. Ill have a better look tonight. The sound comes everyday wheni leave from work but does not happen in the mornings. I park my car inside. It might be the front brake pads then. I'll take a look tonight. Thanks for your help

Re: brake whine

So I checked both the front and rear brakes last night. Everything was okay. The pads and shoes had enough life left on them. The rotors weren't warped either. I had just changed the pads and rotors in the summer of 2010 when i got the car. So I would have been surprised if they were on their way out. I searched a lot online yesterday night and I found that a lot of cars have this problem when its cold/wet outside. It only lasts a few minutes until the brakes warm up so I guess I will live with it. Braking is still really good and there is no grinding noise.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Re: brake whine

Pwnsauce says a lot of what my buddy, who knows cars inside/out, that a spring is recessed into the disc pad, and as the pad wears down, the spring begins contacting the rotor and thus emits a whining sound which is a signal to the driver that new pads are necessary. I hope that this helps. Good luck.
