Ceramic brakes or semi-metallic

I drive a Honda Civic 2001 LX, 74k miles, 2dr coupe, automatic.

I have to replace the front two brake pads, should I put in the extra money for ceramic brakes or just get semi-metallic (I think the stock ones are semi-metallic).

Also, the guy at the shop said my front two rotors are warped and I need new ones. My breaks have been making noise when I break every once in a while, but not often. Not sure if the rotors are actually warped or not.

Re: Ceramic brakes or semi-metallic

I'm going to replace my rotors with Raysbestos and ceramic pads. not sure what brand pads but going to try ceramic. From what I've read the ceramics have copper in them instead of iron so they don't wear out the rotors so fast. The pads last longer, are quieter, and don't make black dust that dirtys the wheels and turns to rust.

Re: Ceramic brakes or semi-metallic

If you get brake pads buy hawk hps pads or the hawk ceramic pads they last forever. I have been running my hawks for 3 yrs and barely any wear on them they look still brand new.

+1

Just don't get the hawk hps and hps+ confused; hps+ is a loud, dusty race pad, regular hps are good pads for stock drivers.

Re: Ceramic brakes or semi-metallic

stay away from auto store brands unless you get the best they carry like premium wagners. the oem pads are already very good. ceramics are less dust good for aftermarket rims that are open, but not as good braking performance. ive tried both and prefer semi metallics. dont get a really hi performance pad either if you only use the brakes lightly. they will never heat up enough to work properly.

Re: Ceramic brakes or semi-metallic

Ceramic is less dusty, but I honestly don't find the hawk semi metallics a dusty pad and the stopping performance is outstanding.

Dezod has really good pricing on brake pads, and the hawk pads are automatically upgraded to overnight shipping from ground. Without question, dezod has always given me the best customer service I've ever had whether it be online or in person.

The Wagner ceramic's available at Advanced Auto aren't bad. That's what I'm running right now.

The ceramic's I've run seem harder than the old semi metallics of the past, they do last longer and little dust but I liked the feel of semi metallics a lot better, especially under hard braking.

i use autostore brands. no problems here. put a 2 years on them and still got plenty of meat. i would go hawk hps if i autox or do a lot of spirited driving but for everyday driving i think oem or even autostore brands are plenty. depends on the driver and type of driving.

Some info from a similar thread:

The pads listed on Dezod's site, and all semi-metaliic pads for that matter, provide better initial bite than ceramic, BUT this occurs at the expense of your rotors and will produce more dust.

I found some good info on brake pads below, to better illustrate my point. This is the reason I always use ceramic pads on the street.

Metallic, or carbon metallic brake pads as they are commonly referred to, have some advantages over ceramic pads, but those advantages may not be outweighed by the disadvantages. The disadvantages may all be addressed by the ceramic pads. Metallic pads have excellent heat characteristics, but tend to have other problems that make them less desirable than the ceramic version of the same pads.

Noise Characteristics

Metallic pads are noisy. Brake noise can be traced back to a harmonic vibration caused by movement of the pads due to rotor run out, and the amount of play in the brake mounting hardware.

Ceramic pads, while still affected by this vibration, raise the harmonic noise out of the range of the human ear. It's still there, but we just can't hear it anymore. The softness of the pad also helps absorb vibration much like the old organic compounds. Think of the difference in the sound of a quarter spinning on a table and a rubber washer spinning on the table.

Wear Characteristics

Metallic pads eat up rotors. The problem here is caused by the fact that metallic pads are harder than the other pad compounds. When the pad comes into contact with the rotor, the rotor will wear down along with the pads.

Ceramic pads are very soft, and only the pads wear. Because they are also more heat tolerant, they will not wear as fast as the metallic pad compounds.

Dusting Characteristics

Dust build up on your wheels is caused by the high carbon and metal content of the metallic pad. Because these materials hold static electricity, they are also drawn to the metal in the wheel and brake system, resulting in thick, black buildup.

Ceramic pad compound have no magnetic properties to draw the dust to the wheel, so it is less likely to stick. The dust is also a light gray color instead of black. Any dust that does make it onto the wheel will be less visible.

Heat Characteristics

Where the metallic pad shines is in its broad heat range. It functions properly at low temperatures as well as very high temperatures. Metallic pads do tend to hold heat, and brake fade due to fluid boiling still happens.

The ceramic pads' only weakness is low temperature efficiency. They need to be warmed a little during the first few stops. After warm up, they work well. And they don't hold heat, so they recover from a hard stop much faster, preventing fluid boiling and brake fade.

Price Difference

The bottom line is that metallic pads work well and do stop better than the semi-metallic pads. However, there are some drawbacks, and these are addressed very nicely by ceramic pads. The downside is the cost.

Re: Ceramic brakes or semi-metallic

Last question....I think I need to replace the front two rotors as well. Any recommendations on what to buy for those?

And, just in case I decide to go with stock honda parts, are these the correct part numbers?

45022-S5D-405 (brakes, set)
45251-S5D-A10 (Buy two)

Don't need any other parts?
