Brake questions
Since this forum kicks *** I thought I'd come back and ask a few simple questions:
Note, I have a Honda Civic 2001 LX, automatic, 2dr coupe, auto transmission.
1.) The front brakes pads need to be replaced. Should I buy honda OEM brakes or can I just get generic brakes for cheaper that do the same thing?
a.) If you recommend honda brakes, is this the correct part?

Do I need to buy any other parts when I bring it in or is that good enough?
b.) If I should buy generic brakes, then what kind and where?
2.) Is it possible to replace the brakes myself? I've never done automotive work before besides replacing my oil filter, and my roomate and I replaced the window actuator on the driver side door. Don't have a jack (besides a really shitty one) or jack stands either.
3.) If I get the labor done, what is a good price for that?

Go to advanced auto parts, tell them your make and model and get the premium pads. Great price and a lifetime warranty. They're OEM quality and will do the job just fine.
As far as installation, brakes are really easy. All you really need to figure out is how to take the caliper off the car (it's only one or two bolts..not sure for the 7th gens). You also need to make sure you have your "inner" and "outer" pads correctly placed in the caliper and not reversed (they're almost always marked, it's pretty easy to tell them apart--they won't fit if you put them in backwards)
If you get the labor done it shouldn't be more than an hour's worth of labor.
If you aren't mechanically inclined I would suggest having a professional do it. Screwing up the brakes could cause a serious accident.

Changing pads isn't too bad, even for a beginner. With anything, just follow directions. If you do go along the DIY route, make sure you regrease your caliper slides!!! I know some shops rake you over the coals for a brake job, so if you don't decide to do it, shop around for a good balance of quality and price. Buy good pads. A lot of these aftermarket pads are made of cheap material and don't last as long or perform as well. I bought my stuff from Napa. My rotors are starting to warp, but I don't want to say it's the rotors just yet because I'm leaning towards the guy who inspected my car who probably tightened my lugs down with an impact gun.

i prefer oem, but if you need them quick then get the best premium pads the auto store has (prolly costs about the same as oem anyway).
