Question about bleeding brakes
Hey folks...
Gonna be working my way through bleeding my brakes soon (DIY-style) for the first time.
Wondering how much brake fluid I'm going to need to buy?
I'll be doing all 4 corners...
TIA!

Re: Question about bleeding brakes
if u are planning to BLEED and flush ur system (try to get all new fluid in ur lines and system.....which is highly recommended) you should buy at LEAST 2 bottles (a total of 1liter)
i used almost a full liter when i flushed my system.
and by "flush" i mean bleed ur brakes until only clean fluid come out. and then rebleed them jsut to make sure all the air is out.

Re: Question about bleeding brakes
I buy the large yellow prestone dot 3 32oz
Works great and its only like 5 bucks
It doesnt really take a lot of fluid if you're just bleeding it, maybe like 10oz if you're flushing, though

Re: Question about bleeding brakes
try and get a DOT4 rated fluid. it has a higher wet/dry boiling point.
just as long as u dont use DOT 5 then ur ok.

Re: Question about bleeding brakes
Just a heads up. Most brake fluid is hard on paint and will remove paint if left long enough. Just be careful when you fill the master cylinder and rinse with water if you get brake fluid on a painted surface.
Re: Question about bleeding brakes
Will do, for sure... I'm uber paranoid about **** like that.. lol
Re: Question about bleeding brakes
Don't bother buying the 32 oz. bottles. You don't need too much, and it doesn't stay good once it's unsealed. After a bottle has been opened, it slowly absorbs water and loses its boiling point.
You can get the ~12oz bottles, you shouldn't need more than two. Unless you are planning on racing or something, DOT 3 or DOT 4 should work fine. For long-lasting use, the wet boiling point is most important, and it can vary wildly by manufacturer even if you're getting DOT 4. Don't get DOT 5, it's silicone based and generally inferior performance-wise, and is sometimes not even compatible with master cylinder seals.

Re: Question about bleeding brakes
most of them will come in 500ml. brake fluid is not that expensive. if u have an extra couple of oz on ur bottle its not gonna hurt.
i bought my valvoline bottle (1L) for about 10 bucks.
if u want to get real good brake fluid, id suggest motul RBF600 or better, the RBF660. but those are about 20 and 30 bucks a bottle of 500ml

Re: Question about bleeding brakes
Mission accomplished... much smoother than I anticipated.
My buddy and I worked our way through replacing pads/rotors on all four corners, and bleeding the fluid.... 3 hours. That included beer and pizza breaks
Thanks for the replies all!

You might wanna exchange "while" with "after" . Lol. Good to hear ya got it done. Saved yourself some serious moola doing it, and a great learning experience.
