Which tires to get?
I am trying to decide which tires to buy with my wheel and tire package. They will be 18" Enkei Evo 5 with 215/40/18 tires. These are the tires I'm stuck on:
- Falken Ziex Ze-912
- Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S (Boring tread)
- Toyo Proxes 4 ( Only 300 Treadwear Rating)
- Kumho Ecsta SPT (Heard they get loud after wear)
- Yokohama Parada Spec-2 (only 300 Treadwear Rating)
- if you recommend any other tires, please don't hesitate.
All of the above tires are bassically the same price except the Falkens. I've heard good and bad things about each tire and I would like any other input before I decide.
In a tire, I'm looking for mostly treadwear and low noise and a somewhat nice tread pattern and sidewall. Performance is not really an issue because my Civic isn't exactly breaking land speed records.
Also I noticed that the Falkens have a treadwear rating of 360 and the other tires have around 300 excluding the Pirellis. I heard that the manufacturers determine the treadwear rating, there is no universal method. So, my question is will the Falkens actually wear better or are they just playing with numbers to make their tires seem better?
If any of you guys have pictures of an EM2 with 215/40/18 tires, and also could you state how much your drop is or if you don't have one because I'm debating if I should lower the car.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Which tires to get?
u forgot nitto neogen nt's , designed for lowered cars, and last about 30-40k miles, quiet, great in snow and rain. great all around tires. and u should lower maybe 1.5", its good with an 18
Re: Which tires to get?
the 912s also wear fast, or so i've heard. my friend has bfgoodrich g-force sports on 18s and doesn't mind them. i'm trying to decide between them and the kdws for my car.

Re: Which tires to get?
if you do with a slightly lower side wall you can get some general exclaims or good year f1's.
Bang for your buck the generals have good turning, pretty good thread wear at a good price. They actually turn better then my dunlops did.
Don't get the pirelli's...there dry performance is disappointing for the price you pay, but there wet performance is pretty decent.

Re: Which tires to get?
I've ruled out:
Kumho Ecsta SPT because they are the most expensive and more performance oriented rather than comfort and road noise.
Yokohama Parada Spec-2 because I think the tread-design is stupid. Also they are performance oriented like the Kumho Ecsta SPT.
Falken Ziex 912 because I can't get over paying so much money on Falken tires while there are reputable brand names like Toyo or Pirelli that would only cost very little to upgrade. I just can't justify so much money on Falken tires. ( Also the tread-design sucks)
so far, thanks for everyones input.

Re: Which tires to get?
proxes4 ftw! best tires ive ever run but they are a little noisy but very grippy. 300 treadwear is great compared to azenis... i would add dunlop direzzas to your list... also great tires
Re: Which tires to get?
I've got 215/45/17 Toyo Proxes 4 on my car right now and I love them. The "wheel guard" is amazing, tire is 1/4 in wider then the wheel. I'm approaching 10k miles on them since Dec 07 and they still look new as far as tread goes, I didn't worry too much about the 300 wear rating since the car should be sold within 2 years. Rain is great, snow isn't but it does work, plus what do you expect with a 8.4in tread on a civic, lol.
Also the tread is "nice" looking too, but more important is it's FUNCTIONAL!! I love it at least.

Re: Which tires to get?
most of the time its the way people drive.. i've had the falken 512's for about 2 years and well over 30k miles and they still grip. the tread is fine but i've been driving more aggressive the last couple months and the tread is starting to wear out and i'm dropped on tein ss with pretty much no gap and no rub.... i'll post pics if i can find some. oh yea 215/40/18
Re: Which tires to get?
i have falkens 912 and love them to death...very grippy tire both on dry and wet road...quite tires also...i love driving in the highway(compared to my cousin's parada's...super noisy!)
people tend to believe what other's says about falkens wearing fast but it's up to your driving style how you want your tire to last...
btw i've put almost 10k on mine and it is still like new after 2 months since i got it.

Re: Which tires to get?
Wow, I feel dumb
it was in your last post.. I was thinking on lowering the car with just an Eibach Pro-kit. So, just an inch cause I don't want to encounter any rubbing problems. Do you guys think it will make a big difference? (look-wise)
Also if I get a Eibach Pro-Kit will I have to get a camber kit?

Re: Which tires to get?
not sure about the camer kit as i never had springs. as far as getting lowered on them i've read by other people on here that they have to let it settle and i believe that it can settle at different points.
Re: Which tires to get?
If you are willing spend some money, go with the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4. I have them in 215/45/17 and like the smooth ride on them. It's an all season tire that handles really well. They come factory on the Acura RSX type S with the 17" wheels.
Re: Which tires to get?
I actually looked into the Michelin Pilots and they don't have the size I need.
(215/40/18)
lxcivic2k1 could you elaborate on the Toyo Proxes 4s. Are they noisy compared to stock? Do they "follow the lines" on the highway like I heard about the Pirellis? etc...
Bassically, I'm stuck between the Pirellis and the Toyos.
Toyo:
+ Nice Tread Design
+ reputable name
+ heard nothing but great things about the tire.
+ Wheel protector
- only a 300 UTQG
Pirelli:
+ reputable brand
+ 400 UTQG
+ Nice Sidewall
- Ugly tread-design (not ugly just too plain)
The price would determine which tire I would buy, but both tires prices are EXACTLY the same!

Re: Which tires to get?
Just remember when comparing UTQG ratings, it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. You can only compare it within a manufacturer. You can't compare a toyo's UTQG rating to a pirelli's UTQG rating. A 300 from toyo is not the same as a 300 from pirelli. There is no set industry standard for this rating.
