How to fix Curb Rash

Well, My mom ran right across the curb and now its all ruff and edgy on the lip of the rim. I was wondering if I could sand it down and smooth it out.??

You can tell you've ripped it by the curb because when the sun shines that part reflects light in liek a million directions like a dimond. If I could smooth it out it wouldnt stand out as much !(U)

Any suggestions?

Heard they do good work.

Or

Precision Rim Repair, but I heard they take a long time.

Haven't had personal experience with them though.

Re: How to fix Curb Rash

look heres my mini diy for curb rash repair. It may or may not work depending on the severity of your damage but i can guarantee it will help. This will also help if the clear coat on the lip of your wheels starts to peel like mine did. First you need to determine a few things. The first thing you need to figure out is is there a clearcoat on your wheels. If there is you're in for a ton of sanding. if there is not then the process is very easy. If there is however start sanding your entire lip of your wheel down. Because once theres a peel in the clear the only way to fix it is to take all the clear off. It sucks man seriously. I had to do it to all my wheels in the winter. Start by sanding the entire wheel with about 220grit sandpaper. I just bought the 3m variety pack for automotive the one that has 220,400, 800, and 1200. once all the clear is removed. (you'll know cuz the dust wont be white anymore it'll be grey) If you did not have clear on your rim skip to this step. go to your curbed spot and take some like 80grit sandpaper something that'll really get it smoothed down. You may even need like 40 to get it out then work your way up to 220 and by now there should be very minimal evidence that the wheel was curbed then start sanding with 400 to get it nice and even and smoothed out. Then start wetsanding at about 800, then wetsand at 1200 then i did wetsand 1800 and finally 2400. by now your rims should look pretty damn good. Then whipe them all down and get them nice and clean. Go to the auto store and buy EITHER meguiars ore mothers chrome/metal polish. I used meguiars but my buddy used mothers and it did the same job. Take an old rag and start polishing the metal. You need to rub it like crazy to get it nice and shiny. Your hands and rag will be black by the time your done but your wheel will look amazing. I'll try and post up a few pics of wut my wheels looked like in each step later.

Not that im tryin to hijack your thread but please buy my stickers to support me if you liked this info lol.

Re: How to fix Curb Rash

That is the rim before. Notice all the scratches and crap on them. Theres a bit of curbage too but it isnt overly deep. All that will be gone like magic.

The middle process just to show you that you dont need to freak out when your wheels turn white from all the dust and half sanded clear coat. Make sure you only sand the lip. You do not want to hit the spokes of your wheels. You can tape but just be careful and everything will be fine.

The finished product. Believe it or not this is the exact same wheel. It took me about 3 hours to do this wheel of solid work time or about 5 hours of workin on it and screwin around with other stuff. Notice curbage and all scratches are gone. Wheel looks like brand new. Its magic!

and one of the whip with the new shiny rims on. Ive only polished the wheels twice since i put them on and i put them on in mid april. And there seems to be no evidence of the finish going away. That megiars is awesome stuff. My car stays parked outside 24/7 and i have not seen any rust or fading in the chrome. However i do reccomend repolishing once a month to keep it nice and chrome-like

Re: How to fix Curb Rash

You'd think if you sanded down the lip where it has been rashed or gouged, it would be flat... and other parts would be rounded or pointed depending on the rim.. wouldn't you add some sort of bondo or something to even it out again and repaint? thoughts?

Re: How to fix Curb Rash

I'd think you'd need to do a hell of a lot of sanding in order for that to happen. The described process above would not remove enough metal to be noticeable. I think when your talking 2400 grit sandpaper your more like polishing as opposed to actual sanding.

Re: How to fix Curb Rash

actually, just use jbweld putty, form it to the shape of the rim, let dry, sand and smooth, then paint and clear

jbweld eh, we have that stuff at work. There are a few different types though, are you talking about the cold weld stuff that comes in 2 separate tubes, tech steel or just jbweld putty if thats the name for it?

Re: How to fix Curb Rash

it comes similar to plumbers putty, in a stick, which hardenes after u mix it. i have not tried it yet, however, the guy who fixes all our wheels at my dealership uses it, and swears by it. and hes good, he makes rims look perfect when hes done

Re: How to fix Curb Rash

i used maguiars hot polysh compound. A little plastic container was like $10. It says for polishing all metal surfaces. The stuff is amazing. Its the kinda thing that will take regular metal and turn it to a near chrome finish. I like the meguiars but my buddy uses mothers. It does the same job.
