Lug Key with Torque Wrench = Bad?
Lug Key with Torque Wrench = Bad?
Ok so I need to get new lugz. I'm planning on buying concial 60 degree taper open end. I want to get locks on mine, but someone was telling me if you get one with locks you can't use a torque wrench to torque the lugz because you will break the key. Is this true?
Where is a good place to get some fairly price lugz that lock and I can use a torque wrench on them? Would you go with steel or aluminum?

You can use a torque wrench with lock nuts. You shouldn't use an impact wrench with lock nuts though. I've seen it done many times before, but its better to use a torque wrench.
I use a torque wrench on my nuts all the time (hehe).

As otheres have said, you can use a tq wrench all day, you just can't use an impact.
Now, the price will vary between types or brands of lugs. For example: You can pick up some crappie painted steel locking lugs on eBay for around $20.00 or you could get some Rays for $180.00 msrp. It is all about what lugs and if the brand and weight matter.
I just picked up a set of the Rays for $50.00. So if you are patient and do some looking you can find a good deal on the ones you want.

Steel is a stronger metal then aluminum, which comes to play when your torquing or fumbling the wrench on the lug. Alum could deform over time.

Re: Lug Key with Torque Wrench = Bad?
^^^This is true. That is why if you purchase aluminum lugs, do your research and get a quality set. Remember you get what you pay for.
Re: Lug Key with Torque Wrench = Bad?
I'll stay away from aluminum then. I think if the the aluminum was thicker it would be stronger than the steel, but it seems like they make it as thin as possible to maximize weight savings. Plus I don't think saving less than a pound all around will help me realize faster lap times, maybe in the future.
Can anyone recommend me a website to purchase lugs from? I see so many sites, so many different sets of lugs. Its pretty overwhelming. I'm going to do some more research when I get home, maybe you guys can help me finalize a decision.

Re: Lug Key with Torque Wrench = Bad?
yeah just dont use a impact wrench on it. I had the cheap ebay lugs with a lock key and the shop i took my civic used a impact wrench on it and completely destroyed the key. It was gay, took about a week to buy another one. It was the shops fault, they should've known better.
If you just look at the key, you can tell the metal grooves are very thin and be easily destoryed with the amount of torque a air impact wrench has.
I just use a breaker bar now to loosen and tighten it back up. Its been working fine for 3yrs even with the cheap ebay lugs.

Thanks for the advice!
I'll pass on the offer for the lug. I don't want to pay 50 dollars for lug nuts. I think I'm going to pick up a muteki set for $35.

muteki are fine, chrome doesnt peel off easily. just be sure to always torque them to the same spec. i think its 80ft.lbs, otherwise have fun warping the rotors.
Re: Lug Key with Torque Wrench = Bad?
i use an impact on my lugs every time, always have, and torque with the key too, and all my lugs use the key, bought mine from orielys for like 30 bucks, had em for a year, and no problems so far
