brakes squeek

i have a 2001 civic ex and just recently when im at a stop and let off my brakes to go, they squeek. Is there any way that you can tell me if its the front brakes or the rears that are going bad? thank you.

Front brakes tend to go faster than back brakes, since you get more of your stopping power from the calipers than the drums.

The front brakes are easy to get at to check. Just pop the front wheels off and look between the caliper and the rotor. If you don't see much of a brake pad, it's time to change the fronts. If the fronts are fine it's probably the back.

There's a DIY on how to change the brakes in this forum.

if the sound is when you let off the brakes and not moving , just a guess but it sounds like the rear brake shoes making noise from rubbing on the backing plates. If not then you vshould check ALL the brakes!

now for awhile I always wondered what the sound was too. everytime I let off the brakes, I would hear a squeak from the rear. I believe it is from ther hardware. the return springs, and hardware for the parking brake. I replaced it and the noise went away for awhile. it came back but i dont pay attention to it.

is a squeek the ONLY indication that the break pads are going bad?. cause i notice after i've washed in between my breaks and rims at the car wash that they catch like CRAZY afterwords when i leave the carwash. the first 2 breakings i do with the car catch like spiderman breaks! LOL. but it goes away after i've been driving for like 5 minutes. just wondering what to look for. my car is a 2002 and i don't think the breaks were ever change yet. i can't remember what they look like. but as far as squeeks go. i don't get those.

by design brakes will squeek. The level of noise can usually be controled via, good quality pads, new hardware, lubricated contact points, lubed slides, and proepr fuctioning calpiers
