another tire myth, or is it

i heard on the radio today that cooper tires says if you fill your tires with hydrogen you get better gas mileage and longer tire life. isnt hydrogen highly explosive? and how is this supposed to work?

i dont see why you would get any benefits from that. the only thing that might lead someone to believe that is the fact the hydrogen is lighter than oxygen... but it shouldnt have any effect on the tire at all.

Are you sure they didn't say NITROGEN? That's being used by a lot of tire shops nowadays.

The effect is not worth it. The main idea behind this is people will need to go to their tire store to get air in their tire. While they are there salesman can unload rotations, balance, alignments, rims, valve covers, tires and so on. The main purpose they will claim is Hydrogen won't expand as much as regular air. So your tires will have constant pressure. Unless a passenger is with you or you burn gas or add gas. Really it is useless.

well we can aremember a few faults in history....hydrogen bomb, the Hindenburg, both EXPLODED! so i know for a fact they meant NITROGEN, since it doesnt inflate or deflate with air changes. only when you let it out, or a tire shop does. and salesmen dont unload all this stuff...NICK! they aonly sale what is necessary for your to drive safely. i dont know what shop has ripped you off, but sound like it wasnt too good! but stay with regular O2, Nitrogen is only for that lazy person that cant do a 60 sec. air check. you lose gas mileage when you have low tires

ok so maybe it was nitrogen. i dont pay much attention to commercials. i have wicked low rear tires. im running between 24 and 26 psi in the rear to relieve stress on the inside edge of the tire until i find a camber kit. i got some wheels and tires ordered so i need to get ahold of one quick.

nitrogen has been used in racing for many years. nitrogen expands more evenly than air when it's heated. this helps keep tire pressures even. it's not a gimmick, but it certainly isnt any more beneficial in moms buick than regular gas station air.

As long as your check your tire pressure on a regular basis, I don't see any benefits to Nitrogen for daily driving.

Like Burke 420 said. "Nitrogen is only for that lazy person that cant do a 60 sec. air check".
