Slicks

ive been searching and havent really found the answers im looking for. So once again i ask for 7thGens help! lol.

I have no experince with slicks thus far in my life and am just currious about a few things. Im thinking about picking up a set, but im not sure what i need? I see FF drive cars with huge slicks that stick out past their fenders, and a some that dont. Do i want a 15? 16? 13? inch rim. How big is to big before you bassically doing nothing? how long do you need to burn out? I know i seem like a complete retard right now, but im seriously currious. I have my old 15' Stealies sitting around from my Vic. Can i slap a set on those? How do you figure out what psi to run at? Any die hard racers out there feel free to chime in.

I dont' think a 13" rim would clear the brakes.

I would worry about running slick if you don't have upgraded axles because I can see them snapping off the line with a really sticky tire and alot of power.

The steelies are only 6" wide in most cases so I would be weary on how your going to fit a wide slick on a slim rim like that. Im not sure how wide of a tire you can put on a 6" rim.

What are you planning on doing with the slicks? It seems pretty unessecary to put slicks on a civic unless you got a ton of mods on it. If your just drag racing, you could probably just get away with just two for the front. Slicks are pretty expensive to run, and people are going to look at you funny if you stick slicks on a steel wheel. If you are going for something like autocross, go for a 15/16 and run a smaller overall diameter than the stock car, then you can lower more and have more gear to play with. And if you are planning on dragging a 7th gen you better have some good mods because slicks arent going to make a big enough difference to warent the price.

ah sorry didnt realize you had such good mods going on, I should have taken a look. Yeah, im sure that set up could use slicks. I know the really wide drag wheels would get you tons of traction, but I would really worry about that tearing apart the drivetrain with all the grip. I would go with something that can still fit in the wheel well, and be nice to you great work. Might just look at two purpose built drag wheels for the front and slide away with steels for the back. Although I dont know if you got too weak on the back if powerful enough torque steer could actually start causing oversteer because lack of grip in the back?

I would say you need at least a 7 inch wide. Theres a wide variety of 15 x 7 rims and so on.

i'm using 13'' bogart rims with 23x8-13 size m&h racemaster slicks. this fits cause it got about 1/2'' spacers. to run these you'll need extended studs.

Heres from my experience....

Buy a set of lightweight aluminum 15" rims (i used Integra GSR rims).

get a set of Mickey Thompson ET Drag 21" x 8" slicks.

Install the slicks on the rims, and inflate to 18 psi. When you get to the track, install the slicks and deflate them to about 8-10 psi.

Go have fun.

Also.... you can fit an 8" wide slick on a 7" wide rim. And it works really really well. It allows for a lot of flex in the sidewall, and makes for pretty good launches.

I'm a "slicks" newb as well - aaand I dont exactly have the car i plan on using them on yet, but just kind of for future refferance...

Im getting a 88 CRX and dropping a b16 in it. After I do that Im going to either super-charge, or turbo charge it. Anyways - my question is would it be "ok" to just use some older tires that dont have alot of tread on them, instead of spending alot on slicks or drag radials?

i do plan on getting DR's/slicks when i go super/turbo - but until then?

No.....

bald tires are not the same as slicks.

Slicks are sticky. They have a treadwear of 0.
Bald tires are Hard. They usually have a treadware of 400.
Bald tires are worse for racing than new tires.

Aren't Honda rims 6" wide? How'd you fit a 8" tire on there?

Anyways, if you're still on stock brakes, you can clear a 14" rim. The smaller the wheel the easier it is for your car to turn (less rotating mass).
Run a 14x7 lightweight wheel... as for tires... I've heard really good things about Mickey Thompson slicks.

Burnout times... doesn't have to be that long. 3-5 seconds is more then enough. All you want to do is heat the tire up. Any longer then necessary is just a cool smoke show and a waste of tires.

On slicks, you want a lot of smoke. You need the tire as hot as possible because it will cool off before you get to the line.

the GSR rims were 7" wide (According to the tire shop) and they fit an 8.0" slick on there.

Theres no way GSR rims were 7" wide. Were they the blades or fat fives? I would think you would be able to fit a 8 inch slick on a 6.5" rim.

i dunno which ones they were. They were a wide 5-spoke rim. All i know is that i dropped it off at the tire place with my MT 21 x 8.0 's and they installed them. They told me it was a 7.0" rim. But all i cared about was that my 8" wide slicks fit on them.

What are the chances of having slicks and snapping an axle? I've always thought on our cars to just use drag radials not slicks because of this.

You should make a few runs on street tires first. If something is about to break, it will be much more forgiving with street tires. Also, with street tires you don't want to do a burnout to warm the tires up, becaus they just become greasy and lose grip. Just a suggestion.

Want to sell me the bogarts?

Dear transformedBG? Best bet is to get some lenso. 13X7.5 and run 22x8x13 slicks. Exospeed on honda-tech sells them for a really good price. 575+shipping for set of lenso and slicks already mounted on them. Running to big of a slick I.E. 25x8x13 could hurt your tranny. All depends on how much power you are making with your car and trap speed that determines what size slicks you should run.

I am going with 24.5x8x13 slicks as well. These will be mounted on 13x7.5 lenso. I have one bogart Pro 4 for sale in good condition if anyone is interested. I called bogart and they told me its 363 to make another one to match.

My setup is K20A2 motor swap, K20A2 6 speed tranny, ACT heavy duty clutch, DC sports race header, intake, 2.5 inch full greddy exhaust, catalyic removed, PRC ECU, aeromotive FPR, Golden eagle fuel rail.
