new brakes problem!

i just put in new rotors and pads, but before i put them in i was riding on a brake pad that looked like the size of a slice of salami, and whenever i turn i would hear metal lightly grinding on something. i thought after i changed everything it would be gone, but its still there, what do i do?

btw if it matters i DIYed it and using powerstop rotors and hawk hp+.

could possibly be a piece of the caliper set-up that may have broke, and is causeing the pads to slightly hit the rotors. a friend of mine had a piece the size of a paperclip that helps to hold the pads off the rotors break, and caused his pad to wear down like nothing. it ended up scraping the rotor some, causing a groove in it. i'd lift up the front of the car, check the side that is making the noise for anything that is loose, or may be broken. if need-be, take off the other wheel to compare to what it should look like.

did you check everything else before you changed the pads? Also did you pop on the pads with the old rotors without machining them? And were both pads the same size or one smaller then the other?

And yes it does matter if you are using powerstop and hawk HP+, those arent exactly pads that will be quiet performers. Those are basically pads meant for track braking conditions and will have different material in them. High performance rotors and pads will make more noise.

i thought that the pad was slightly supposed to touch the rotor, but ill check it when i get to work

ehh i didnt really look at the old stuff but from what i remember they wore pretty evenly and the rotors would still have some life if they were machined.

thanks guys for the responses. keep em coming!

pads do sit against the rotor, but there is thousandths of an inch cleanace between the two. Like .001 or .0001. either way, tis very very small. If they were riding the rotor, you would be able to tell by the increase pad wear from side to side. Plus the lack of acceleration when driving.

Without looking at it or measuring the rotor or drums and what not, its kinda hard to really tell you what it is. You need to remove everything and inspect it again.

If it only makes noise when you turn, something isn't tight. Its going to rub all the time or it won't rub. Check the wheel, make sure the rotor is true to the hub and make sure that the caliper slides freely. If you have lots of miles on the calipers, rebuild/replacement is a good idea.

cheukkin is an unknown quantity at this point
it's normal, new brakepad has a coating that will make a " tak tak" noise for a period of short time, after the coating is gone, no sound at all. Don't worry bud.

hehe..if it was a constant I'd say it was the dust cover...lol I nicked one on a volkwagen once and forgot to bend it back from the rotor...HAHA the customer came in with a bat thought I'd ruined his car...weird thing is...he gave me 5 bux after I showed him what i did on accident and fixed it.....good times hehe
