Got new rubber. Screw the new Azenis!
Picked up some Hankook Ventus RS-2 Z212 tires yesterday, of the 215-45-16 variety.
Oh man do these things OWN! Honestly, they are so sticky I actually felt resistance when I pulled my finger nail out of the tread (yea, it’s so soft I could gig my nail into the rubber). My frigging finger was somewhat stuck to the damn tire (well it felt tacky anyway)! LOL, 200 tread wear rating.
Supposedly the sidewall for this tire is softer then that of even the new style Azenis, which makes for a better 60' time and less spin off the line. The tires are also remarkably light. They are noticeably lighter then my old ES100s in 205-45-16 size (less tire then what I just bought!). This is obviously a good thing.
On top of that, these tires (or so I’ve read from various sources) are top notch in the wet. Not that Ill be using these in the wet. I’m sure they will be dead long before the "rainy" season in San Diego starts up.
When you first start driving on these things they aren’t that sticky. I assumed that they needed to be warmed a bit in order to reach their potential, and I was right. After putting about 10 miles on them I noticed that they became SUPER sticky. Hell, I even bogged a launch that would have roasted my last set of tires.
I plan on taking these out to the twizties behind my place for a test run today after I get out of work, although from the corkscrew off ramps I’ve hit up yesterday, these thing put even my previous favorite tire (Toyo Proxies T1-S') to absolute shame.
And to top it all off the set of 4 tires only cost me 370 bucks after tax.
Anyway, now that I have some decent rubber, its track time baby!

they have a tread wear rating of 200, so.. DUH.
BTW these have been dominating the national SCCA Auto-X events on cars that are running non R compound tires. Azenis were top dog last year. 45 wons on the Hankook side has turned that table however for 2005... and the seasons not over.
Just because you arent familiar with a product doesnt mean its no good. Obviously the people who REALLY know tires, know about these.

Are they good tires? Certinly. are they THE tire to have in Street tire restricted autocross classes... That remains to be seen, but it appears the top drivers are still leaning twards the tried and true pair of Kumho and Falken.
