Keeping ma' chrome shiny
Keeping ma' chrome shiny
I just bought 17" chrome Koenigs and i wanna keep them lookin nice and shiny and keep the finish so that it lasts a very long time. Any suggestions or products you know of to help out this process???
wrong forum. be better in the auto detail threads.
chrome is gonna be much harder to keep clean than any other ordinary rims. i would say inspect them every other day for any stain/bird ****/grime/anything.
but chrome? =| got a pic?

Chrome is porous, stuff gets trapped in it, air actually helps it survive. Waxing it seals all the crap in, causing substrate corrosion to happen faster. The chrome separates from the wheel it's plated to, then you've got big trouble. You need to polish it with a good polishing compound like Mothers or Maguiars, and keep it clean. DO NOT under any circumstances put wax anywhere near it.

There are way too many Chrome Playa-Haters on this site ! =P
Anyway dude, Chrome is super easy to care for.
I know I'm disagreeing with everyone else on here, but Unlike them I've owned chrome, for 5 years.
For best results, use the spray brake cleaner on them that mechanics use, it's real cheap in a spray can, smells like 90% alcohol. Then Wash em off with your Car wash (a nice one perferably), And I always spent an extra minute, spraying em down, to make certain to get all the residue off. (for that added bling bling effect)
Also, waxing your chrome is kinda pointless cuase it's metallic and not a painted surface, however chrome is not porous, and it will not harm your chrome.

Some chrome is painted, my rims are like a painted type of chrome, many many many chrome rims out there are. They have a clearcoat on them, so I believe my would be safe to wax??? I have been, and it has worked very well, I will start using a polish if I shouldnt wax still? I think chrome looks good on civics if they are 5 spoke, and not crazy, IMO.

What kind of wheels do you have?
Golden Apple calls thier finish "HMC (high metalic coating) Silver" and not chrome.
Even though some of the company's out there that sell HMC wheels advertise those wheels as chrome, really they should not, it is fraudulent.
The three step chrome plating process can not be painted on.
why do people hate on chrome so damn much...comments like chrome should only be on this or that car...thats like saying no white rims on civics, because they're not rally cars...focus on buying what looks good...I think a lot of people make their purchasing decisions based on what other people find acceptable, and thats pretty sad...my rims are chrome, my car is satin silver, and they are the Motegi MR7's, simple and looks really really really nice in person, cuz they aren't over bearing...now if they were the kinda rims that have like spokes tha are shaped like lightning bolts or 7 inches think...then I understand...but that would ugly on a $160,000 BMW 760Li just like it would on a $15,000 civic...
also a suggestion, if you're going for chrome on a civic or a small car like ours, go with 18's or 19's that way the chrome won't look all cluttered...like it may look on 16's or 17's

Porosity is directly portional to a materials density.
Chrome Plated wheels are plated with copper, nickel, then chrome.
The Chrome doesn't even bling, it's the nickel that blings.
Say what every you want about Chrome,
Nickel has almost NO porosity what so ever, and definatly does not retain water. The Aluminimum "Substrate" has 0% chance of ever seeing water with out curbing the wheel.
forget it ... i give up ...
