Hey guys,

I'm just doing some research on chrome wheels, and I was told to ask for "triple plated chrome" when I buy chrome wheels. Well, I asked a seller on Ebay if his wheels were that, and he replied with this:

All aluminum wheels are triple chrome plated. Triple chrome plating does not
mean there is three layers of chrome, no matter what someone told you. To
get chrome to stick to aluminum, you have to first plate it with copper,
then second with nickel and third with chrome. Hence triple chrome plating,
meaning three steps. Chrome is like a clearcoat on your paint, it has no
color. The color that you see is the nickel, not chrome.

Then I asked him is this process of chroming the wheels ever done 3 times to have extra protection from peeling, cracking, etc, and he said no that is never done. What's going on here, I thought you could buy wheels that were dipped 3 times in chrome or whatever?

I don't know the chroming process all too well, but it is true that chrome won't stick to aluminum and it does need to be coated multiple times to get it to stick. There's a couple different layering processes. Honestly, just stay away from chrome wheels, the coating is detremental to the strength of the wheel. If you like the look, buy mirror polished and clear coated wheels. Same look, much stronger.

Be careful if you buy chrome, make sure there is a warranty against peeling and bubbling. I have a 1 year warranty and replaced one because it bubbled in about 50 spots, and peeled about 4 inches off. All the others are fine, but I keep them up very very well even more so than I did. They are keeping much better. If I could redo it, I would have gotten polished instead of chrome. Just make sure you have warranty on the chrome, and dont curbcheck so the warranty is still valid. I you havent bought them yet, make sure they arent too crazy, 5 spoke chrome looks good on our cars, in my opinion. Good luck, enjoy rims

I just bought 17" chrome Konig Prophets, and they indicated that they came with the maufacturers warranty. If i would have seen this thread a week ago, i might have reconsidered chrome... I really hope it doesnt bubble or peal
