powder coating rims? good idea?
I'm thinking about powder coating my rims black. I have a black 02 civ and its lowered a good bit. I like my rims... even if they are small... they save me money when it comes to tires
... anyways.. they are 14in. motegie mr12's. Do yall think it'll look good? I've got the black TYC tails and I painted my headlights black... THanks...

It is basically up to you. Personally I wouldnt do it to 14's, it is a waist of time, upgrade to some 17's-19's and then do it. Will look alot better IMO.

unless you have someone local to do a good job of it, you're looking at about $50 a wheel. plus shipping. so like 250-300. if they make your wheel in that color, you could buy them and sell your current ones and likely come out better.
i rather spend the money on upgrading to better wheels. like 15" si rims or gsr rims. some sort of 4-lug honda/acura rim.
if you really love your 14's because tires are cheap for them, then stick with them. if your having issues with tire prices, then powdercoating your rims isnt a good choice.

14" wheels are already small looking, black will just make em look even smaller..i got black 15" and i wanna try bronze or gun metal instead so it'll stand out a little better

Either way! Powder coating is the ****! Totally ****s painted rims in the "A"! A friend has a set and no lie you could hit the rim dead nutz with a hammer and it wouldn't leave a mark, knick, scratch, etc. Although I don't suggest doing that for the fact of breaking you wheels. I would agree with everyone though on upgradeing to 17-19" wheels before.

Can you powder coat ur wheels urself? I am thinking of doing that to mine over the winter. I think all you would have to do is strip the old finish off, sand, and get some spray. I know most powdercoating is made from synthetic materials. I wonder if you can buy it in a can....

I'm going to get my Volk TE-37s powder coated black with a polished lip. The guy is giving me a pretty damn good price I think. It's a local shop in southern California. He's sending the wheels out to get powdercoated, doing the machine lip or polish if I wanted it, and banging out all the dings on the wheels so it's like new. His specialty is fixing bent or cracked wheels.
He fixed my brother's cracked Advans and when he remounted the tire, he said the wheel's were perfectly balanced after the welding and banging all the small dents that he didn't need any wheel weights. Even though, I think that was a coincidence since he possibly can't account for the unequal distribution of weight possibly from the tire itself.
Overall, priming the wheels, powder coating, polishing the lip, all repairs up to medium dings, and remounting and balancing the tires will be around $420-$450. My rims have some curb rash from the previous owner and I checked the inside of the rim, which has little dings, which I think is from installing tires and probably bad road conditions. I don't get air leaking and my car rides balanced. I think the small dings on the inside insn't a major concern, but might as well do it all at once, ya know?
And one last thing, I suggest you don't go blackies on 14s. It's too ghetto. Get atleast 15s. And since you like the blackies look, maybe some Rotas? It's just not good to spend more money on the powder coat work then what your rims are actually worth.
