Soap and water ok to clean front brake disc and calipers?

Was watching a tuner show on TV about brakes and it's project car was an RSX-S. They took the rotors off the car and washed them in a sink with soap and water. I asked my friend if using soap and water was a bad idea and says it's too mild in his opinion.

Well? Any other suggestions? Brake cleaner doesn't really do much appearance-wise. And if I do this, do I have to take the rotors off? I really don't want to if I don't have to.

You just want them to look better? Soap, brake cleaner, solvent, they're all degreasers but won't make the rotor look much different. Buy new rotors with a good coating if that's what you're after, they'll look good everywhere but where the pads contact.

If you are running performance pads that give off alot of dust, dont even bother cleaning your brakes, it is so hard to clean.
