Zenki Forged Nuts mixed with McGard Lock[?]

Zenki Forged Nuts mixed with McGard Lock[?]

Will it have any adverse affect on handling if I were to install a McGard lock to my Forged lugs?

The McGard wheel lock is 30% lighter than OEM.

Zenki Forged helps improve handling by reducing unsprung weight. Each piece weighs in at a mere 25.0 grams (0.9 ounces).

I think there's not much affect, but I just want to get your opinions.

Or I can buy a set of McGard and weigh them to see the difference. Then come back on the board and post the results and maybe this could be a guideline to those people who's wondering about mixing the forged to McGard

Honestly, you won't see much of a difference. The closer the mass is to the axis of rotation, the less it has an effect on acceleration and braking. Since the lugnuts are mere inches for the center of your hub, there will be virtually no difference.

On the other hand, if you put, say 25 grams of weight on the treads of the tires, your wheels would most certainly require re-balancing. Then again, who'd put a 25 gram weight on a tire... i dunno.

Thanks for the reply ELaudio. I installed the McGard locks along with the Zenki Forged today and I didnt notice any difference.

I think Id buy me the rest of the wheel lugs by mcgard. They seem to be of a real quality product. And they come in Black color which I was looking for a lugs.

Very high quality product.
I personally have Black chrome lugs and locks.

I should have known before I bought my Zenki. By the way, where did you buy yours? I have yet to find a spline-drive lugs to fit an aftermarket wheels.

edit: nevermind the lugs, Summit has the cheapest $72.00

I didnt say Zenki sucks. I belive no one on this thread said Zenki sucks

You are better off with Zenki than Muteki. But most of all, you're best bet is McGard even if they're not forged. McGard is still 36% lighter than stock. I can sell you my used Zenki lugs which I bought for $60 if you want. the reason why Im selling the Zenki is because its too big for my tuner wheels. I keep scratching my wheels whenever I take the lugs off. McGard is smaller in diameter so it fits and sits perfectly on our tuner wheels.

My bad, I read your earlier post wrong then. Since you said you were gonna switch to McGard from Zenki, I thought there were problems with the Zenki nuts. 60 bucks for the zenki nuts is kind of harsh, no? oh well, i'll fork out another 15 bucks for the black McGards with wheel locks then.

Thing is that I wanted blue, long, and closed end lug nuts like the Rays Dura Nuts. It would go well with my volks because of the blue valve caps and blue stickers.

Then buy the Rays nuts. Believe me (I've got a set), they're strong, they're light and they're secure.
They're forged duraluminum, they're tough, but because they're aluminum alloy, if someone tries to steal them and they don't have the key (that would be why they're stealing them), they're going to use steel or chrome vanadium tools to do it... the lugnuts are soft enough that the 7 sided/slotted lock will strip and they won't be able to get them off. Now I know that sounds stupid because you've now got to get this stripped key off, but trust me... a little headache to get it off (yes there are ways to do it, I'm not going to discuss them openly) is far better than no wheels on the car.
HOWEVER, if you use the right tools (a 6 point 19mm socket and the Rays key, you can get them on and off with no problems at all). I've had mine on and off so many times the anodizing is coming off, and they still slip on and off with no problems.
Now, yes, $110 is a little steep for lugnuts, but they're all the same weight, so there's no balance problems.
I did have a set of Mcgard locks, honestly, I didn't like them. They were big and bulky, heavy, and they were a pain to get on and off. That squiggly pattern key never stayed in the nut and they didn't really seem to hold torque.
I also had Zenkis at one point... no problems with them at all. They were a little heavier than the Rays... I got rid of them because they were open ended and I hated cleaning **** out of the studs.

A couple questions for you Boilermaker1. Are the heptagon wheel locks unique for each set? If it's just like the kyokugen lug nuts where all are 7-sided and all you need is that tool, any smart thief would just buy that tool. That's what I'm worried about when buying the Ray's Dura nuts. I know the McGards have unique locks for each set, that's why I was leaning towards the McGards.

You mentioned two things that might make me not buy the Ray's nuts. One, the soft nuts mean you can't use an air gun I'm assuming. Shops that mount and balance tires, repair flats, or rotate for you typically use air guns. I guess I can request them not to use it, but it's just an area where they can possibly destroy my expensive lug nuts. Or maybe I can maybe mess them up... I would freakin cry man...haha.
Two, if the blue andonize starts to come off, it will look like crap. I like the McGards lifetime warranty on the finish.

I've been thinking about it for such along time now and dunno if it's worth putting out triple the cost of Muteki lug nuts to get the Rays or double the cost of the McGard splinedrives. It's still eating at me, but I'll be okay with my plain chrome lug nuts until I figure this crap out...haha.

How long ago have you had the McGard? The McGard that I have is smaller in diameter than the Zenki and the RAYS. Thus, making it easier to take off without scratching the wheels. The McGard model is called 'Spline Drive Locks for Tuner Wheels" and is 36% lighter than OEM.

Zenki is .09oz/ea

RAYS is .08oz/ea- Which I to have on my WRX. Zenki is as big as the RAYS but RAYS are close-ended nut.

DuYaKnow, You are correct, RAYS do scratch after a couple of uninstalling them. But if the lightness is what you are looking for, then it would never really matter. Also, I constantly watch the tech whenever they do wheel job that requires them to take the lugs out. You cant use an airgun, you are correct.

The RAYS has ID number on the nut. They may look the same on other set of RAYS but the ID number is unique. I believe my previous RAYS were number 27.

I know a few people who have had trouble making them hold proper torque. They tend to get loose after a while.
I got the Mcgards when I got my OZs... so that would be last March.

Rays has 4 keys, the key is 7 sided with a slot... the slot is in a different place on each of the 4 keys, and to the passer by, they all look the same... the slot is maybe 1-2mm different on each key, but its enough so only the right one will fit. Don't lose it... its $30 for a new one, and the only way you can get it is to have the store you bought the nuts from order one from Mackin.

PS--- you should never use an airgun on your lugnuts, especially with aluminum wheels. Too much torque and you'll crack the wheel, and we all know how much attention they pay to the air gun torque setting

Im guessing you didnt have the Spline Drive for Tuner Wheels then? The big bulky heavy is the Cone Seat Bulge Style and that could be that one that you had.

Zenki/RAYS fit the 19mm from my cross-wrench while the key for the McGard is only 17mm.
