What's going to work the best?

I have 225/40/18s on Motegi MR-7s right now and I just can't stand the wheel gap anymore. I haven't dropped it thus far because everyone tells me that It's gonna hit and rub like hell, so I'm thinking of getting 215/35 series tires to widen the gap slightly to allow a little more room for my drop. Question is... is this really gonna make a difference? The car is a daily driver so it needs to ride clean, I don't mind a little stiffness if it's gonna keep the car from rubbing all the time. Need help on kind of tire (ie. Pirelli, Toyo, etc.), best lowering method (ie. springs/struts, adjustable coilovers, etc.) and any tips would be appreciated.
THANKS!!!
