wow, that really does suck. but it only cost $70 to fix two bent control arms? i did almost the same thing in my car, but i just got a nasty scrape on my bumper (no breakage tho), smashed my hubcap, and had to pay $300 to get my lower right control arm fixed (maybe they replaced it?)

I dont see what the big deal is, that should be expected... Think about it, a 2000+ lb car sliding and hitting a curb with 1 wheel, so if Force = mass X acceleration, and say a 50% loss of speed on impact, as the wheel shattered Vs stoping the car from going over the curb thats about.... a Whole Crap load of force on one wheel ...
Any wheel placed in those circumstances would be destroyed.

yea i just rota subzeros and with any lightweight rim that is bigger in size it seems like it would occur it is just a matter of force, and it doesnt matter if they were rotas or something they owuld have been bent badly or shattered like that

What I'd like to know is at what angle that hit the curb. That might make some more sense. If it went straight in (rim face parallel to the curb), then I can see that happening because the rim isn't designed to be loaded sideways. But at some sort of angle, I dunno. Those things would have to be superbrittle to just rip the whole face out clean like that. Shatter the spoke nearest to the impact ok... but theres definately a flaw in that design. Find the pic of USAFStud's Si wheels. He hit a curb much faster than 20 and just cracked the lip.
Dont forget that Rota HAS recalled wheels for similar spoke strength/cracking issues before.

Well he said he was turning so You could assum he went stright in, but with the wheels tunrned to one side (Terminal Understeer)
Like this /---/ So I could understand how they broke du to the probable oblique angle of impact

By the pics, it looks to me like he hit the curb with his wheel parallel to it. Odds are most light-weight cast rims would shatter - or be scrapped after an impact like that. It's like Zzyzx said, that a **** load of kinetic energy for a rim to take.
2800lbs x 25mph on a thin spoke wheel = bad news.
No matter what, cast wheels will ALWAYS be weaker than forged ones. Doesn't make a difference if you're running $75 el-cheapos, Rotas or top of the line BBS rims. Cast is BAD, if you hit curbs at high speeds.
If you have mad-*** cash to burn, then go ahead and spend the money to get forged rims. I wouldn't (and didn't) bother. Knock on wood, I've never been dumb enough to hit a curb at that speed. If I ever do, then damn - I deserve to replace my wheel and control arms!

see if you get forged rims they will not shatter and the rim will stay on your car. but what happened with that car is that the rim fell off, which is more dangerous. i would rather have a totally screwed up rim that is still on my car and i will be atleast able to control my car alittle. i think thats better than no rim at all

Forged rims won't shatter, but they sure as hell would bend. You just dropped $400 a wheel and now one is bent!! Fvck that. All cast wheels have the chance of shattering. It also depends on the spokes. The c10's have really small spokes. Now if it was a slipstream, it probably would not have shattered.
