Rep Power: 292 Duplicolor Wheel Coating, Anyone Ever Use It?
I was at advanced auto browsing the spray paint aisle, and I see a cheap solution to what I always wanted. I have a black and silver scheme on my car, and last fall I was having a really hard decision choosing rims. It was between Velox VX-8 in gunmetal (the color I really really wanted), or the RH C2 Evo Replica (the rim I always wanted, which only comes in silver). In the end I got the c2 replicas, but I still really wish I had gunmetal. I found this hyper blackish/gunmetal can on the shelf today. It's called "Duplicolor High Performance Wheel Coating", and I couldn't help but get it. We did a test coat on a hubcap from my old truck and it came out pretty well. I'm a bit reluctant to use it though. I've seen people try to spraypaint their GSR's and hubcaps and they started chipping and looked like ****. This can says it has "improved resistance to brake dust, chemicals, cleaning solvents, heat, and chipping". This is definitely the color I want if I can get it and it will last. My rims are still pretty damn new though. Never curbed, never scratched, still look like they did the day I bought them. I really don't wanna mess these up, cuz the consequences could be drastic. Has anyone ever used this stuff before? I was planning on doing a thin coat and seeing how it turned out.
P.S. I know powdercoating would be much better a choice, but that's about $100 a rim around here, and I don't have money to throw around like that.

Rep Power: 399 I used it before I got mine powdercoated. It sucked. I preped the wheel exactly as the can said, it chipped off 12 hours after I put it on. It also goes on kinda rough... so it grabs dirt. I wouldn't use it.
Powdercoating shouldn't cost $100 a wheel. I paid $35 a wheel for a special order color and I think most people on here are paying about the same.

Rep Power: 292 I haven't really checked around the price for powdercoating, but i assume it's a lot because everything in virginia costs more. I.E. custom exhaust piping $350, Catback exhaust install $150, Spoiler Install $120, painting sideskirts and rear lip + install= $650 .

Rep Power: 0 I used the silver color Duplicolor stuff on my friend's Saturn wheels. They were clearcoated alloy where the clearcoat was chipping and flaking off huge time, so they basically couldn't help but look better. We got all of the original clear off, primed em, and put on two coats of the wheel paint. This was a few months ago, and they've been driven daily - through a Cleveland winter - and still look great. Maybe it has to do with the different makeup of the wheel? We really didn't do anything special, in fact it was kind of half-arsed. I would NEVER do it to wheels i cared about, though.
