hey i got the rims that i'm getting.. or rather picked them out, but i was wondering if i should upgrade the tires... the tires that comes with the rims are (205/40/17)... should i upgrade them to the next level (215/45/17)???? will it make that much of a difference??

yes; 215/45R17 is the closest to the stock overall diameter, and therefore you will not mess up either your spedometer, odometer, OR gear ratios. Also, your rims will be slightly better protected from ruts and the like by the 215/45.

but what if i want some low profile tires?? i mean dang, i don't want that much tire really.. i live in detroit.. should i really get the 215 tire???

its still very slim; if you look at the member's rides, the vast majority of people here have 215/45, because its closer to stock size and still very low prifile.

If you are going from a 205/40 R17 to a bigger tire, it should be either 215/40 R17 or 225/35 R17.

I don't think that 10mm wider will be worth the investment. Howeverm you WILL see a noticable difference between a 205mm and a 225mm.

To keep the speedo correct, if you upgrade to a wider tire, then the profile should be lower, not higher. Otherwise, they'll be wider AND fatter.

215/45R17 is pretty much the defacto standard tire size for our car; you want to keep the speedo accurate, and this size is THE closest you can get for a 17" wheel.
