Exclamation Please HELP!!!

look i really need your help!! alright well i'm just a 17 yr. old kid right and my dad WAS gonna get the rims and tires i wanted for me, some 17'' enkei dm5's wrapped in yokohama, and well he read in his holy bible (consumer report aka don't know ****) that plus size tires are not good and hydroplane more which i think is gay cause i live in texas and come on if it rains i go slower i'm not stupid. also look at how many people have plus size tires and have NO problems at all. some cars are commin outta the factory rollin on 17's. also what about sports cars man my buddies 87 vette has some huge *** tires and does he have problems NO. well anyway can ya'll help me find some online sources that i can throw in his face and tell him otherwise?

I'll try to help ya out man!! doing a search ri now!

here's something i found and if you look to the right you will see other categories but i'm still looking!

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...droplaning.htm

"Directional tread designs are especially helpful in increasing hydroplaning resistance when relatively wide Plus Two, Plus Three or Plus Four tire and wheel applications result in fitting a much wider tire to a vehicle than its original equipment size."

^^^that's quoted from tireack , so directional tires better resist hydroplaning. just look HERE at the bottom of the page( last paragraph)

The Plus Concept

Grassroots Plus Size Test Results

Hydroplaning is caused by improper inflation of the tires when water gets in between the tire and the road causing you to slide.

Just tell him with a 17" inch size you would be getting diorectional tires which allow the water to channel through the V shape thus reducing the risk of hydroplaning. Trying to help you out as much as i can cause i know you want those 17's!

WHEN SHOPPING FOR RIMS IS BIGGER REALLY BETTER!

no prob man. but if i was you what i would tell my dad though is .....

"The bigger the tire is dad the more V tread it has thus causing the thread in my tires to channel the water thus preventing the risk of hydroplaning. Also DAD the #1 reason for hydroplaning alot of the times is improper inflation of the tires and i promise i will keep my tires inflated properly at all times."

that's what i would say

BLAH BLAH BLAH.....
Directional tread. Thats the only thing you gotta tell him. Directional treading was designed for one thing, and one thing only... WATER. It is the most effecient way to clear water out of the tires path, giving you maximum contact area on the road. Thats the sole reason Goodyear first came out with it.
I'll vouch personally...
Take a stock 185 width tire with an Asymmetric tread, drive just 1 side of the car through a puddle. Then take a 215 width directional tread, and do the same thing. The directional tread is gonna run through it like a hot knife through butter. You probably won't even notice the car twitch. Directionals are that good at clearing out water.
Doesn't matter how wide it is. If you stick a 335/35/20 on there, it'll still clear out water better than any asymmetic POS tire. The only advantage to an asymmetric is snow traction, but in TX, why would you care about that.
Oh... BTW, Consumer Reports, more often than not, is bullshit. If you're looking for info, go to Tire Rack's website and read the write ups. They know what they're talking about a lot more than the CR "experts". No way I trust a magazine that tests TVs one week, Boats the next and Car tires the month later.
Ever notice that just about every high end tire is Directional (even the comfort ones)? Ever think there's a reason for that? *Hint Hint, Wink Wink*

Have you driven on your stock tires? Has your dad? They hydroplane so easily it's not even funny. Most likely anything you get will be better.

I know my Falken Ze-512's are a TON better.

^^ i know my dad's never driven my car and has only rode in it twice and never in rain. last week when it did rain here i was leavin my house which is in a housing addition and right before the entrance there is an s curve and i took it at the speed limit which is 20 and the *** end of the car swerved over like i took it at 50. i printed out 2 things earlier from tirerack.com that akia posted up there ^, one was the thing about the civic performing better on the road and track with 17's and the other one about hydroplaning and it said that the 17's directional tires performed no different when on a wet track than a dry one. hell the time was only 1/100th of a sec slower on the wet course, and the directional tires were on backward! my dad obviously treats me like a kid and thinks i can't do my own research. i knew there wasn't a problem because you guys would complain about them. he just thinks that since he read it in consumer reports that it's the truth. i read the article and it gave no specifics. it didn't say what kinda honda they used, what kind of tires, what kind of wet conditions they used or anything, it was just an article with a lil digram.

Tell him that all the people here that know what they're talking about agree that the stock tires are some of the worst, most unsafe tires around. Read the reviews of the stock tires online (I think 1010tires.com had a lot of reviews about them, and tirerack.com probably does, too), almost EVERYONE says how bad they are. People say things like "when I installed these tires I had the worst traciton imaginable, and that's on DRY ground." There are also a bunch of 7th gen Civic owners there who say how terrible they are when they came stock on our cars.

i know man, i tried tellin him this, but he doesn't listen to me. he thinks i'm some stupid kid that just wants to waste money. well it's some what true. does he want me to mod my car? no. will i? hell yeah! why? because it's what i want and what i like. i've got plans for that car and i know he's gonna be furious when he sees the noticeable stuff like that cat-back i'm gonna get, but i don't care i wanna do it while i'm still young and don't have things preventing me to do so like a family and kids and stuff. so if he doesn't help me out this year by giving me only money this christmas so i can get them, i'll just work harder to get a job. i hate how he never supports what i wanna do. hell my friends all got crap for their cars already for christmas and i want somethin too. my friend seth got a 330hp 350 for his stingray corvette and it's all chrome and really nice, and my friend jason's gettin a different gear ratio for his 5.0 mustang. I wish my dad was like theirs. BLAH BLAH anyways guys thanks for the help and info and i'll let you know what happens. later bros
