Problem w/ 17's?
Problem w/ 17's?
alrite so being SUCH a GREAT EXCELLENT friend..my friend asked me to post up a question on this site...so here it goes
Friend : my dad tells me 17 inch rims are troublesome because they snap and bend easily with low profile tires and tire rub. is there any argument i could use in defence of 17 inch rims on a 92 prelude? such as recomending some of the more stronger rims and the myth about tire rub
could you guys help em out?
thx in advance

tell your dad he's an idiot, they dont rub on STOCK HEIGHT unless you slam the car. my car is lowered, they still dont rub. you can get 17s but you dont have to go low pro, it just looks MUCH BETTER that way.
Your friend might lose the argument if he calls his dad an idiot
First of all, what size 15's are on the Prelude right now? 205/55-15? The argument is:
Tire rubbing is caused by having a tire that is either too wide or too tall (or both) for your fenderwell. You would fix that by buying a 17" tire that is only 10mm wider (215) and almost the same O.D./height (40) so there would be no rubbing problems = 215/40-17
Bent Rims are caused by hitting objects or potholes (usually when equipped with tires that have a very short sidewall). Tell your friends dad if you order the 17" tire with the same O.D./height as the 15" tire there would still be almost 3.5 inches of sidewall to cushion the 17" wheel. (it would go from 4.4" to 3.4" which is a very reasonable amount of cushion that would keep your wheels from bending except under fluke circumstances)
Then when you purchase wheels don't buy anything stupid. Keep the width around 7" let an expert help with the offset.
