What oil should I use in a northern climate?
Re: What oil should I use in a northern climate?
just checked, it was very tight, alternator wouldn't budge. any real mechanics around or just you armchair mechanics? also tried your suggestion of grounding the alternator with cables and no change. the only thing more frustrating than this problem is your stupidity.
if that were indeed the problem, why would it suddenly preset itself 60,000 km later? there is no logic in your reasoning at all.

All of you play nice. Only warning. If things seem to trend towards getting more heated, I'm locking the thread.
For those of you playing nice, thank you.
p.s. y'all live in places that are too damn cold.

Re: What oil should I use in a northern climate?
i am in upstate NY, it has dropped in the past -15 F which puts it down close to that...
plus i use to live in eastern europe, where we use to light fire under the oil pan if it was -40plus .. i have the idea of cold weather.. it seems the colder it gets the weak points will come out on the car .
the more extreme temperatures brings weak points.. like hot weather the cold also brings out all weakness in any car.

I lived in upstate NY also (Saratoga Springs) and the coldest I saw was low 20s. Heat, on the other hand, I've seen high 120s here in Vegas. Never really noticed any real problems other than getting burned by metal parts of the car (seat belt buckle, shift **** in old car), that is, if everything is working correctly. Only time I saw a problem was when my coolant system wasn't playing nice, then temp gauge would start to go up.

Re: What oil should I use in a northern climate?
Does not budge does not mean it’s making the correct grounding contacts thru the mounting bolts..
in in case you have not kept up with common things that fry the ECU / pcm. A loose alternator will use the control wires for ground if it’s not getting a good enough contact to the engine block. Result is a damaged ECU / pcm.
If you can tighten the alt belt without loosening both of the main mounting bolts in addition to the adjustment bolt and nut then it’s too loose.
Once it’s loose then junk starts getting in the gap, once you start getting junk you start loosing even more electrical contact area.. so maybe it’s taken 60,000 to get to the point it’s a failed patch job.
