Honda engine oil
Honda engine oil
My question is if it's okay for me to use 5w 30 full synthetic oil in my honda civic 2012 instead of using 0w 20 because in my country it's hard to find that oil grade and if it is found it's so expensive.(it has 150k miles) Thank you

Re: Honda engine oil
I am from Lebanon, and the thing is that I am not the original owner of the car and here in Lebanon all mechanics recommend 5w 30 for hondas it's like a standard🤦♂️. My concern is that probably the owner before me used always 5w 30 and if I switch to a light oil (5w 20) it may be horrible and start to consume oil ( now it's not consuming oil). Btw the car runs perfectly and engine is so smooth.

the thing is that I am not the original car owner i bought it recently and here in Lebanon all mechanics recommend 5w30 for Hondas, it's like a standard here🤦♂️. So I am worried that if i switch to a light oil (5w20) it would burn oil especially that the engine has been running on 5w30 since it was new probably. Note that I have no way to contact the previous owner to know details about previous maintenance and also the engine honestly feels so smooth and in a good condition. Also the engine does not burn any oil.

the thing is that I am not the original owner of the car and here in lebanon all mechanics recommend 5w30 for Hondas its like a standard🤦♂️. And I am worried if I put 5w20 it would start burning oil since its thinner, especially that the engine had 5w30 all of its life. Btw I dont know who's the owner and there is no way I can know the service history of the car. Also the engine honestly runs perfectly smooth and sounds great

Re: Honda engine oil
The oil viscosity is split into to portions, with 2 different scales. The higher the number, the thicker the oil, for that scale.
O is the cold start viscosity at a designated temperature
20 is the operational viscosity at a designated temperature
So 5w20 will be thicker when you start the car, but the same viscosity when its running, as 0w20.
5w30 is fine, the car should be ok, but 0w20 is best, then 5w20.
