Compressor Clutch Loud Click

A few months ago I changed the clutch on my compressor clutch. It was running fine for several months. However, I have a known leak somewhere in the system and recently topped of my AC in preparation for the summer - I used the guidelines in the service manual and everything checked out. However, now the clutch makes a loud "click" when it kicks on. Our Odyssey also makes a click but this is much louder. I am going to clean my condenser and double check to make sure I didn't overcharge but anyone have any ideas? I was meticulous about the clearance with the shims - I checked it after the click started and I'm a little at the low end now but still within spec.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Compressor Clutch Loud Click

Does it cool ok?

They all make a click upon engagement. Some more obvious than others. More so as they age and the cushion disappears (many when new have a cushion or pad embedded that looks and feels like cork).

Bottom line: It is a machine. It is allowed to make noise.

Re: Compressor Clutch Loud Click

Sorry for the late reply, I wanted to clean the condenser before I measured everything again. Based on the all the readings in the service manual I was maybe 1 or 2 pounds high on the suction and ~5 psig high on the discharge. However, given the accuracy of my manifold, and the fact that I have a slow leak somewhere, I'm going to call that success.

I'm with you on the noise - it's a good thing because my car makes many strange noises! I was just concerned that it was such a loud "click". As long as someone on here wasn't saying that it was messed up, I'm good. Just didn't want to find out when I could have saved it. What is that click anyway, just the clutch mating up with the pulley?

Thanks, ezone.

and the fact that I have a slow leak somewhere
This is what dye is for. After it leaks out, the evidence can normally be found in short order using an ordinary blacklight in a dark garage. Then you can proceed to fix the leak once you know where it is.

That's nothing as long as it's cooling good. No or poor cooling, or 20PSI difference on the low side and 50+ difference on the high side might give one pause for concern though.

There are sooooo many variables that influence AC operating pressures, specs are are usually expressed as variable ranges in charts instead of single numbered concrete specific specs.
In fact, if your manual tells operating pressures as single numbered specs, I suspect either you might be reading it wrong or the manual itself should be seriously questioned. Just a guess on my part though, I haven't seen your manual.

Yep, exactly that. 2 chunks of STEEL mating flat surfaces together.
