AC DEFROSTER FEUL DRAIN

I live in the Great White North and I've been having to use my AC to defrost on a very regular basis. I use it more now than in the summer. It really should be my choice to use it or not but it comes on automatically whenever I switch to either defrost modes. My concern is the excess feul drain. Does the AC use a lot of extra gas? Could I easily disconnect it if this is the case? Has this come to anybody else's attention or am I just a complete tightwad?
