intermittent starting Problem
intermittent starting Problem
Occasionally when i start my car, it will turn over but not fire, it has done this about three times in three months. But lately its done it twice in two days. Does anyone elses do this, or does anyone know whats wrong. Just with winter coming in the UK dont want to get stranded. Seems to be getting worse??????

I have the same problem in my 02
does the little light in the cluster that looks like a key flash on the dash while its cranking? If so its because your immobilizer cant read the transponder in the key. You dont need to crank it for an extended period of time. Just pull the key out then put it back in and try again and it will start

well for either problems wether it be long cranking then it starts or it cranks and cranks, then after the third try it will finally start could be caused by a number of things. First do a visual inspection of the battery connections, ignition coils, fuel injectors and make sure nothing is loose or corroded.
You may have a fuel delivery issue, ignition problem, vacuum leaks, something clogged. Its really hard to say. You have to run some tests to determine what it is. If it cranks for an extended period, then starts, you may be losing fuel pressure. Either through the a injector staying open or a fuel pump check valve that has failed. I am not sure how many electric fuel pumps have check valves, I have been told only mechanical pumps do, then others say electric ones do, so someone with more experience would have to answer that. An easy check on that would be too hook up a fuel pressure gauge and see if the rail holds pressure. If after 20 minutes the pressure falls to 0, something is leaking. Could also be a bad ignition component.
Now also to help with the no start for several times, when it happens, check for fuel and spark during the times it happens. If you have an intermittent no spark during those times, then you know its a ignition problem. No fuel means a fuel problem. then go from there.
But check all the obvious first, check the air filter, spark plugs.
that too. I always forget about the immobilizer unit.

I just had my 158,000 mile 2005 civic ex special edition do the same warm no starting randomly, I bought about four mouths ago it has a new 1-18 battery and new alternator someone else installed do the same thing, I replaced the spark plugs. But the Random no starting didn't go away until I cleaned all the main grounds up under the hood, The Negative battery cable connections, Note The engine would turn over every time but would randomly not start. This was very frustrating when in a hurry to go to work etc. Also this car would always start after it was shut off for over two to three hours or cold, thanks good luck everyone..

Re: intermittent starting Problem
I had a problem from brand new 7th Gen car with 1.7 motor.
After running for a while and stopping engine, say for gas it would crank but was hard to start.
Last year on really hot days the engine would just stop intermittently for no reason and after about 10 minutes I could start it normally again.
Eventually found the problem was the TDC Sensor failing with heat soak at garage or during really hot weather (>38deg C)
Old sensor had J5T23991 2509 PLC written on it.
I replaced it with 37840RJH006 Sensor from Honda which Supercedes J5T23991 2509 PLC
It was showing Fault Code P1361 when it was failed and hot.
Hope this helps.
