Tran swap from CVT to something better
Tran swap from CVT to something better
So my son is getting his license and has been saving his money for his first car and found a 98 coupe with 140k. I didn’t notice it had a CVT transmission and basically it’s been having a lot of issues. Does anyone know what other transmission can be swapped over and what all I need to do this. The VIN search showed it to have had a 5 speed, and for some reason it appears the seller swapped it out for this CVT. Don’t know why they would do that so basically I have some work to do since I volunteered to help my boy out.
Any help would be appreciated !

Re: Tran swap from CVT to something better
To my knowledge, the CVT was only offered in the HX, which is really rare in the 6th gen. It was offered with both a manual and a CVT. I imagine your resource is incorrect and it's in its factory setup, assuming this is even an HX.
Your best option is to sell the car and buy something else. To put it bluntly, it's not worth the time or money to swap it to a different transmission, because you have to source a transmission, all clutch components, the correct software, internal components, and plumbing.
