HELP "R18" Engine Cracked Block Info

Hello.

My neighbor's elderly father owns a 2007 Honda Civic EX with only 28,000 miles on it and he bought it new and is the 1st and only owner. The mileage is confirmed via carfax. He is elderly, and never drove it much, and then was diagnosed with Parkinsons about 6 years ago, and they took his driver's license away. The car has only been used by his family occasionally to take him to the Doctors or other short errands.

Anyway, she is offering to sell it to me in like new condition for $5,000. Blue book value has it between 7500-8500 value.

Do ALL 2007 Civics have the R18 engine? How can I tell if this vehicle does?

The Honda Service Bulletin states the following: "VEHICLES AFFECTED 2006–08 Civic – ALL except Civic Si and Hybrid"

The carfax shows the following info about the engine, but its all greek to me:

"1.8L I4 F SOHC 16V"

Is this an R18 engine??

Should I avoid buying this car??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

It's an r18, but with the mileage that low and it being well maintained, it's still a good deal. If it turns out the block does have problems you can get a good used engine and have it installed by a mechanic. Total cost for that would probably be like $1500-$2000, which would bring you close to book value

Would you happen to know if there are any preventative measures that can be taken to prevent an issue from starting altogether, or, to prevent a block issue from becoming a total catastrophic engine failure?

Re: HELP "R18" Engine Cracked Block Info

It's a flaw in the casting of the block itself, so nothing you can really do to prevent it. You may get lucky and your block is fine. If you notice that you're losing coolant get it into a shop as soon as you can
