10,000 mile checkup

Did any of you guys go to your dealership for the oil change, and bla bla at 10,000 miles? I got this letter and was like "i just got my oil changed a week ago, screw it" and they said on the letter "Quality parts, with good low prices" I heard the dealerships a rip, so did any of you do this?

lol, my check engine light came on right at 10,000 miles, took it to the dealer, they said, "thats to remind you to do the 10,000 mile service", so i ask what the service is, all i heard was "refill" "lube" "check" and "$59.99", thats when i told him to just turn the light off (this is before i figured out how to turn it off myself).
its worthless, $10k mile service is the dealers way to get a lot of money from you, they figure that if they make it sound extremely important, you will pay whatever it is to get it done.

haha yea thats pretty much what i thought it was. I looked in the manual too to figure out how to turn it off. Cuz it was blinking and i thought "what the hell" so i looked it up. Too bad dealerships try and do that to customers

I think you meant "Maintenance Req Light" not CHECK ENGINE. They are not the same meaning.

basically its an oil change and tire rotation. at about 10,500 i needed an oil change but i had just put new tires on (17's and i have free balance and rotation for life from discount tire) so i just got my oil change.

heres a question for ya- does anyone here wait 5,000 miles between oil changes like they recommend??? I always change it around 3,500 and they always tell me im early, - "ugh i know dumbass" is what i feel like saying.

well...it really depends how much stop and go traffic you're experiencing. I do it every 3000 because I live in the city. I noticed when I changed my oil, it was BLACK at 3000. But if you are driving 95% hwy, then I would say 5000. Hey, if you got extra coins sitting around, go for Full Synthetic. It can last up to 10,000.

heh ... I remember when I got like 28 mpg ... but that was because my tire air pressure was so low ... check your tires, 2k2ex ...

hi,

my car is 30000km now.

I always follow schedule oil change and filter change, however, I went to canadiantire or did it myself. Will Honda void the guarrantee only because I didn't go to them and there is no way I can prove I changed oil myself?

I need a good answer as many of us do change oil ourself...

thanks

No, changing your own oil will not void your warranty. And I always change my own oil to make sure it's done right. And I never rush myself; when you begin to rush yourself, you start making mistakes.

The thing about a lot of dealerships / oil change places - sure there are some knuckleheads working there, but even if you have a competent mechanic doing your oil change, people still make mistakes. Shop employees are under tremendous pressure by the service manager to finish as quickly as possible, and when you do 100 oil changes a day, accidents can happen no matter how careful you are.

It may sound silly screwing up something as simple as an oil change, but believe me it happens. I've seen other mechanics put the oil pump in the hole in the valve cover, order X qts. over the phone, then when they think the oil is done pumping, they don't even check the dipstick. Well one time the parts counter forget to press the ON button for oil, so the oil never got pumped into the engine! Luckily one of the service advisors caught the mistake before the customer drove off for 3000 miles.

Shjt DOES happen.

ok, thanks,

I just followed DIY on this page to change oil. And I don't see leaks and engine light (not maintainance light) never goes on later on, nor the oil lights. I assume evenything is ok, can I?

how about other things on the list like, "check ABS lines, filter element, blablabla" on the list of what to do when you reach 30000Km or 20000mile. If we don't do those, will they use it against us if something happened within the warantee period?

thanks

There is a simple checklist of things to check when doing an oil change:

Oil drain plug + new washer on tight? Official Honda specs are 30 ft. lbs. But I just tighten it until it's firm. But not too tight. Overtorqueing the drain bolt can crack the oil pan, and it's a pain trying to loosen it the next time you do an oil change.

Oil filter on tightly? I just screw it on until it makes contact, and then another 1/2 turn should be good. Once again, it doesn't need to be too tight. You'll just make it harder on yourself when you take it off in 3000 miles. Also, before you put the new filter on, be sure to check for a leftover gasket that didn't come off all the way. This happens mainly with non-Honda aftermarket filters. If you accidentally put the new filter on top of an existing gasket (double-gasketing), there will be oil EVERYWHERE when you drive off afterwards. Haha believe me, I know this from experience.

Enough oil? Just put in around enough oil (I think it's between 3 and 4 qts for the 7th gen), and start up the engine for a short while to let the oil circulate through the filter. I usually wait about 10 secs., but when I did it on customer's cars I usually just waited until the oil light on the dash went away. This way, you get an accurate check of the oil level (if you check it while the car is cold, it will be artifically high). If the oil level is lower than max, keep on filling it and rechecking (if you've already started the car once like I described earlier, you don't have to keep doing this every time you add oil LOL).

And make sure you put the oil cap back on the engine. A good practice is to put the oil cap on the valve cover, so it's hard to misplace it and having it in front of you reminds you to put it back on. I accidentally left the oil cap off of a customer's car one time. But I caught it soon after and we called him up and I put it back on and we gave him like free wiper blades or something. Like I said, when you do 100+ oil changes a day, it's easy to make simple mistakes.

So basically 4 things to check:

Oil drain plug on tight
Filter on tight
Enough oil
Oil cap on

And in response to your other question - no the dealer will not void your warranty if you haven't done any of your other services. They really have no way of knowing, anyways. Half the stuff that's in the Helm's manual (checking ABS lines, lubing joints, etc.) we never even did. Ever. If you want the real lowdown on exactly everything the Honda dealership does on interval maintenance, let me know. I don't want this msg to get too long. LOL.
