Great Gas Mileage all of a sudden? What happened?

Not that I'm complaining or anything but my gas mileage just went through the roof. I drive an AT so I expect to get less than rated. I live in a small town at school with lots of hills and I usually get 300/tank. Fill up to about 11-12 gallons at the gas station. The car has 33000 on it so it's pretty broken in. I've also driven home a couple of times to NYC, about 250 miles and still usually end up getting 300/tank. Not this time though.
I went home this weekend and when I went to fill, I noticed that I had gone 370 miles. When I filled I could only put in 9 gallons. That means that it still had 4 gallons left, a theorectical 160 miles to go and 530 mptank. I thought it was just a fluke so on my way back I tested it again. I filled up full when I still had 200 miles to go. Then, I hitup a gas station again when I got home. I traveled 196 miles on 4.5 gallons. That's 43.5 mpg, theoretical 570 mptank What is going on?
The only thing I can think I did differently was drive at 70 - 75 instead of my usual 60 - 65. However, I always thought that driving faster consumed more gas so worst gas mileage? Anybody have any ideas?

Its warmer... warmer air is less dense, so there's less oxygen per a given volume of air that the car takes in.... which means less gas needs to be mixed with it to make the mixture work. Therefore, your milage gets better... that and they probably stopped using that oxygenated winter **** gas... that stuff burns cleaner, but also burns shitty from a milage performance standpoint.

that happened to me once, i averaged 330 miles per tank, i drove to kansas to visit my sister, on the way home, i had filled up my tank full. once i crossed into oklahoma, i started to follow two cars that were hauling *** on the interstate, a bmw and mercedes. i was hitting 90mph+ for 1.5 hours. i get home, and i still had close to half tank. by the end of the week, i had emptied the tank and noticed that i went nearly 500 miles on the tank with the abusive driving. after that, i dropped back down to my normal 330 miles per tank, i dunno whats up, but i guess 330 miles 50/50 driving for an auto ex is still good.
i just bought some "stp fuel cleaner". Hope this works. It says to only use it every 4,000 miles and i have 10,600 on my car so im going to give it a try...

Usually it depends on how hard you drive the car.
If you keep the RPM's in the 2,000-4,000 range consistently you are going to get better gas mileage.. However if your hauling *** and ur RPM's are constantly in the 5-6k's u going to burn more gas... faster. Obviously.
The air temperature also affects the amount of gas required for combustion but I believe someone already stated that...
Where you’re driving will also affect your MPG. Keeping the car at a steady 3,500RPM on a long highway stretch is going to burn less gas then having to stop and start at stoplights...
So it all depends?!

Heh, mine was about avg on gas around 200mpg until about 1,000 miles on the car then it went up i hit 400 on a tank...now i avg around 300 and i have 6k on it only mod so far is an intake
Think of it this way, lets say you have a MT and you are in 5th on the highway going 100 mph. You are probably going to be at around 4000-5000 RPM BUT you are going 100 MPH, you are going to go a lot more miles without having to fill up the tank. And 6spd would give you even better hwy mileage at 100 mph. So when the officer stops you for going so fast just say that you were trying to get better gas mileage.
Hey all wuzup, I bought my Civic for better gas mileage. 01 LX Manual trans, Ive been getting around 40 mpg. I use cruise control in the morning and set it to 70 mph. Last week I started to use A/C and it has not hurt the mileage that much. I drive it about 100 miles a day depending on traffic.
Just so you know Going faster doesnt give you better gas mileage. This is why years back when we had the gas shortage they decreased the speed limit. Going slower = better gas mileage
Perhaps the gas stations in your area finally got their refills of gas without all the crappy winter additives. Now that CT isn't using "winter" gas anymore, I get 150 more miles per tank.
