STEERING WHEEL CLANKING SOLVED!!
2001-2002 Civic Steering Wheel Rattles/Clanking Solution-Finally!
If you have read some of the forums on the mystery of what to do regarding the clanking and rattles comming from the feedback within the steering wheel, you will appreciate this. I have been working with the dealer on this on my 2002 Civic EX since it was new last May. Many of you thought it was the struts, alignment, wheel balancing problems, etc. No, no, and No! I made sure that all of those were verified A-OK prior to submitting to the dealer. The dealer several months ago changed the Reel Assy., Cable and the Signal Cancel Switches (Body Switch). That was not the solution, but it was what was rattling. You have to request the dealer to insulate with the 3m foam backed with sticky tape on one side insulators (they have a big selection in their parts department for isolating all kinds of rattles, ie. in pillars, roof liners, etc. ). They should have done this in the first place. They spent 1.5 hours on warranty and I personally took the assisant service director for a spin on rough road but primarily speed bumps in an office complex to get the car to make the noise. IT IS FIXED!!! THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE WRITTEN IN. There is no service bulletin but there should be. When you turn the steering wheel left and right even at a stand still, Now, there is no more rattle or clanking. HOPE THAT HELPS YOU, BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN VERY FUSTRATED FOR 12 MONTHS.STEERING WHEEL CLANKING RESOLVED!

The 3m insulating material is placed around the signal cancelation swich (turn signal unit = body switch) and encasing the reel assembly cable.
