Tranmission Problem in 2001 Civic VTi auto CVT
Tranmission Problem in 2001 Civic VTi auto CVT
Since two months back, my civic (a 2001 Vti auto cvt model) is giving me an annoying problem. The engine frenquently (although not eveytime but most of the time) has a rattle for a few seconds when I pick up from stationary. The rattling is similar to when you're picking up in a manual car and not pressing enough gas. (like a lack of power, I think). I am not flooring the accelerator or anything like that. In fact, even when I vary how much I press the gas paddle, the problem still exists, although the duration of the rattle varies.
I have a feeling its something to do with MVT (cvt) of the car but I'm not sure as I do not have much knowledge in auto mechanics. I have tried reseting the MVT but it didn't help.
Appreciate if any of you could give me advice on it or suggestions on what could be the problem. Thanks in advance.

Take it to the dealer, they will fix it under warranty. I think this is a common problem for Civic with CVT. The problem is more severe when moving uphill from standstill (when the transmission engage and w/heavy load). The dealer will replace the shifting solenoid and some other parts in the transmission.
A lot of the 2001+ HX CVTs experience some "rumbling" of the transmission around 1500 RPM. I'm not sure if this is the same problem, though I think it may be. There has been a lot of discussion on this at the Civic HX group on Yahoo. The link for this site is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hondacivichxcvt
Supposedly a flushing of the tranny will fix the rattling/rumbling. I'd check out that site for more info and to ask the members questions about the problem.

I had a similar vibration early on and the dealer changed the fluid and went through a 12 point procedure. This fix lasted only 3000 miles and had to be re-done. Finally, they replaced an updated part in the transmission clutch linkage and 36K miles later it is still working perfectly. This vibration was annoying but not engine threatening. The CVT driving experience is worth any trouble.
