that shiz is annoying...it was hanging off draggin everywhere in the snow...shoved my docs in there and rip it out..threw it in the trunk if i ever need it!!

Aiite - some fresh info. Finally found someone at a |H| dealer that actually knows the purpose of the rubber-thingie.
The rubber air-dam is part of the underspoiler which deflects air under the car and smooths out airflow under the car to increase aerodynamic response and decrease resistance. In a small degree, it also deflects air into the engine compartment to assist with cooling - but to a very very small degree. It also serves as a minor deflector to keep debris out of the bottom of the engine compartment (rocks and such... especially if you tailgate on sanded winter roads).
Since it is not a "highly designed" piece of the front underspoiler, Mr. Mechanico says that it should not impact the ride or the aerodynamics of the car too much if it's removed. But, he said to think about it this way - "Its' been on the Civics for three years now, 01-03. If your car really didn't need it, why would |H| spend the $$ to keep putting it on? Take a look under the Sunfires, Grand-Ams, Accords and Corollas and you'll find the same rubber-thingie, albiet it's not wrapped around the bumper so they're less prone to damage on those cars."
Mine stays on, and I now always think about not damaging it when I park, leave driveways, etc.

Mine came loose from all the unplowed snow and ice from the east coast blizzard we got earlier this year. Before that I didn't have any problems with it.Originally posted by AR
