Maintanence required?

I know that after a while the -maint req'd- light will blink when you start the car, when you need an oil change. I have not had a chance to change the oil, but now the light stays lit. Is it because I need to change my oil. Or does it only stay lit when there is a problem with the car. I always thought it would only blink to remind you of the oil change.

It comes on according to set intervals that you can look up in your owner's manual. They aren't really for "oil changes" per se, but for semi- or complete services such as inspecting the car for any problems and such. The owner's manual will also tell you how to reset that annoying light. I never do those services as they are a huge waste of money.

As the others said, it's just a reminder. Nothing is wrong. I just had mine reset yesterday. I believe that it blinks until it's 10k since your last service and then it stays lit. It explains it all in the manual.

yeah comes on at 8,000 miles to tell you that you have a 10,000 mile check up on the way and mine came on again at 17,000 reminding me to do a 20,000 check up. I do them myself but are things like oil changes and rotate tires. check the fluids... It's different at each interval but your manual lists what you should do at each one.

EDIT: the check engine light comes on if there is actually something wrong with the car and you should scan the codes to see whats wrong where as the mat'n required light is the maintenance schedule reminder.

How do you reset the maintenance light?

I've tried unplugging the battery, but that does not seem to work

Yeah, at 8000 miles I was like "What the fudge?!" Then I read that it blinks when you start your car after 8000 miles for 10 seconds. Then after 10000 miles, it stays lit. I got annoyed and reset it after I called and found out that "routine maintence" was like 125 beans just for an oil change, tire rotation, and some other useless junk.

Cripes...where do you people get your service done? I paid $35 for 10k service last month...oil change, rotate tires, check fluids. Although the normal oil change is $25 so they are still basically charging you $10 to rotate the tires while it's up on the lift.
But still....$125? That's just nuts.

well this has been a popular problem. i just did this a few weeks ago. everything in the manual is correct except for one tiny detail. you have to make sure you odometer reading is showing and not your A and B trip setting. once you've done that just follow the manual. and you should be good to go.
