Brakes???

Hello all...

I was wondering, will a B18C5 bolt directly into my Civic?

No, just kidding. I do have an honest question though, pertaining to brakes on our Civics. Recently, sometimes I have been hearing a grinding noise when I brake, especially when I go down hills. Also, when I brake on level ground, my brakes squeak about 50% of the time. My car has only 10000 miles on it. What gives? Do I really need a brake service this early? Or is it just my driving style? I am somewhat of an agressive braker, and I have somewhat of a habit of staying on the gas too long and then using my brakes harder when I am coming to a stop. (Yes, I know it's bad, but at least I don't have "type R" stickers on my car)

Any feedback is appreciated. Merry Christmas-

MyOtherRideIsBritney

They may be nothing wrong at all. Take a look at see how much of the pad is left. You should be able to see it through your wheels unless you have the stock hubs.

You could have glazed the brake pads or some sediment could be inbetween the rotor and pad itself.

How fast are you going when you hear the grinding?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here please, but what your hearing is the squeek indictator. What happens is when your brakes pads wear down, the indicator will rub against the rotor to let you know its getting close to replacement time. If your brakes are working fine, then you may just need a pad replacement.

You are right about the squeak indicator. I haven't changed the brakes on my Honda yet, but I am sure it will be the same as the Toyota and Nissan I have had. At some point, you will start to hear your brakes squeaking really frequently. When this happens, take a look at the thickness of your brake pad. Brakes will occasionally squeak because of glazing -- they just get a little coating on them due to whatever, or just because they do, who knows- but you can tell if they need to be changed by looking at them. If you have some nice wheels on your Honda just look through the wheel - otherwise you may have to take off the wheel- the brake pad sits inside the brake caliper (when in doubt about what is what buy a Chilton's manual - or a dealer manual). If you can see some brake pad - they are good. If you can't, or if you can only see a little, tiny bit - they probably need changed. If you wait too long, you'll hear grinding - that's a bad thing because it means the pad is all worn out and you are damaging your rotors. 10,000 is a little early for a brake change, but not unheard of. Changing your disc brakes is easy, and you can buy some great, performance style pads and still come out spending a lot less than the dealer charges.

Ok! Same grinding problem on my 02 ex auto sedan. Pulled off the pads tonight and checked them for thickness. The inner pad was worn more at the bottom than the top. At the top the measured almost 5mm and at the bottom just over 3mm. So this obviously means my rotors are warped and I need new pads if I want the sound to go away. If you do a search on brakes you will find a lot more info.
