hill parking w/ the crappy auto tranny
ok, i parked on a an extreme incline today....
the car was facing downhill when i put it in park...
i always use the handbrake but forgot today....
while the engine was still running, i kinda let go of the brakes and the tranny went *clank*...
i was like oh shiet.. and shifted back to D.....it shifted but it made some nasty grinding noise...
i put the car back in park and turned off the engine...(this time with the hand brake on)....
restarted the engine and tried driving off...when i pulled forward a few feet, i heard another loud grinding noise....that was the last one and now the tranny seems fine....
so anyways, anyone know what happened? i thought if u don't pull the hand brake the tranny might just get stuck in P but i didn't think the gears will start grinding when i move again

Rep Power: 0 Honda autos are noisy to begin with.
Also, you never park on an incline w/o using the parking brake. This puts a lot of stress on the tranny and that's why you heard all the noise when you shifted. It's normal and make sure you always use your parking brake! I know this because me and my wife have had 2 auto trannies (accords) and had the exact same thing happen in both cars under the exact situation that you describe. Anyhow, don't worry about it and you know what to do.

There's a little L shape in the tranny that locks up the tranny that locks up the wheels and it that thing breaks there goes your car down the hill. I went to my friends house and he lived up in the hill and he herd the same load clank and he told me why it did that and it freaked me out
. Heres what you do when park up hill. First keep your foot on the brake, second put it in park, third pull the hand brake, fourth shut the engine off. When you turn it on first start the engine, second step on brake, third put in D, fourth release handbrake. Oh yeah this only happens when your uphill

it's a good habit...this way, you will prevent little screwups....i was parking on this huge hill and forgot to pull the handbrake because i was staring at the spectacular view of the city...

Rep Power: 0 Actually, you need to put the tranny in park BEFORE you pull the parking brake. It needs to fully engage in the park position. You just don't want the weight of the car resting on the tranny.

and if both the e-brake and the tranny fails, while in park, your car will roll into the curb(assuming u actually parked the car properly..)
and if there is no curb, ur supposed to turn the wheels so that if the car rolls, it doesnt' roll towards the street...
