How you rate the 7th Gen Civic?

hi guys. Three month it's been since I got my SIG(ex) auto coupe, which is also my first brand new car..and I have to say i'm rather disapointed. Problems I have so far:

1. that "small metal piece rolling inside a tin-can" noise from behind the glove compartment around 1600 rpm
2. passenger side front seat rocks back and forth when driving
3. light ticking sound from driver side door or behind dash board when driving or just rolling at low speed
4. ok i know this is not a Benz but windows rattle all the time, I can imagine what it's like once I install my subs
5. flexing door panel when rolling window up and down. never seen this in any other car
6. loud signal cut off spark like noise from speaker when switching tracks on the cd player
7. loud whirling sound from the engine comparment when steering at low rpm. I was told it's the power steering booster kicking in but it just sounds too loud
8. fogged up head light
9. rattling sound from "somewhere" when pulling out or cutting in some corners. sounded like a faulty cv joint, but on a 4000km car???
10. shitty treatment I get from my dealer when I bring my car in (4 times)

I like to hear your opion please, is this car worth keeping or should I just trade it in once the warranty is up? since I never own a civic prior to this one..how is this generation's civic comparing to previous ones? do you have anything good to say about this car? Are SIRs(the 160hp hatchback) any better than the SI(ex) in terms of quality?

Trade. No questions. The sooner the better. Sometimes, we don't all get a good Honda.

I'd be more convinced with the quality of the Si hatch but there aren't enough Si owners to give a hardcore answer unless you find one. The only thing I can say is the Si hatch is more refined than the older one (at the cost of performance)... and refinement usually comes with more stuff... in particular sound deadening stuff. Who knows, I was told by a Honda technician that rattles in a Honda is natural however I will admit it can get quite annoying. I remember my car was pretty quiet until I got into my second accident (and it had a shitty job of it being fixed). The car doesn't really rattle as bad as i thought it would but I hear a lot of people complain about it. You could try adding more sound deading equipment if you want.

Here is a list of problems I have had....

1. Frail body panels...ended up in 2 dings on my drivers side....
2. P/S Quarter panel misaligned, ending up in a misalignment of body line....
3. P/S Door does not close properly...

Other than that I love my car, this is the best car I have had since I began driving (this car is #3) and they are made pretty well...so other than the 3 reasons above, I would rate my car an 8 or 9 on a scale of 10....

If you already have that many problems, I would get rid of it. Who cares if it's under warranty. Actually having to use the warranty is a pain in the ****. Kinda like the kia and hyundia warranty for a billion yrs. Nice to have but who wants to go to the dealer for repairs all the time even if it is free.

Honda puts out some bad ones like everyone else. This particular forum will give you the wrong impression of honda in general. Most of the people who post situations like yours have only joined this site to do just that, voice their anger. I feel terrible for those that buy their first honda and get a bad one. Chances are pretty slim of this happening and it taints those people's opinion of honda so bad that they begin to think they are as bad as domestics.

I'm rambling...I would get rid of it if it bugs you that much. Do something about it instead of just complaining. I am not saying that you are complaining but a lot of people would rather whine and cry then take care of the problem.

The window panels flexing is completely normal. I have only seen a few cars that didn't do that. I have never seen a honda that didn't do it and I have had 6 of em.

The cd player spark thing could be caused by the cd itself.

If the windows rattle when they are down, that is normal. If they rattle while up, something isn't right.

Take the car to a different dealer. If you have been to the same one 4 times they probably cringe when you pull in. In other words, they probably wish you would die.

This my first honda I have had my 2001 civic since december 2000. And the only problem I have had is the seat rocking in which they fixed. I do feel bad for the ones who have more problems with their cars.

Thanks for all the thorough responses! I'll most likely trade this car in once I make more money..maybe for an RSX, that's what I really wanted in the first place. SIR is nice but they only come in sticks..and wify don't drive stick shifts. Mbow i've read your other posts and although you maybe offensive with your words sometimes but you do make alot of sense most of the time. "kia and hyundia warranty for a billion yrs" LOL that's a good one About the sparks from the speaker...you said it may be the cd..do you mean the cd player or the discs themself? cus they do that with all the discs I put in and they're not burned cds...all orginal. Yes I do believe Honda in general are much better than Domestics, but comparing to Toyota, maybe not quite there yet, in terms of quality.

Well, sometimes I mean to be offensive but not all the time. There's a lot of ignorant honda haters in disquise, ya know?

I was talking about the cd ( the disk) itself. Not sure what the problem could be. Does it occur all the time or only when you have the volume at high levels?

I would say that toyota is a hair better than honda..just a hair. Your civic (7thgen in general) isn't an accurate representation of honda in general. Don't forget that honda is one of the 2 best car manufacturers in the world with concern to reliability and durability. It's been this way for years.

Honda and toyota are almost the same. Both are very conservative in their styling and they basically practice a lot of the same manufacturing techniques.

Anyhow, like I said, me and my wife have owned 6 hondas. It's been about 10 yrs all together and all I can say is, I couldn't bring myself to spend my money on another brand.

I'm glad to hear you put out such high praise on Hondas.. being a Japanese myself. This civic's my 3rd car, prior to this I had a 92 Accord, and 90 Corolla, I was very happy with the Corolla, 10 years and it never had any problem, maybe it was just a simple car, less things to break down.heh..the Accord was leaking oil and anti-freeze all over and that's when I got this civic. I still love my car...that's why it's bothering me so much...and ever since I took it rock climbing in the mountains I tend to have grew some ultra sensitive ears

Yes..the spark is especially loud when the volume is high...but I never had this problem with my accord. It could be bad ground wire connection? I'm not sure...maybe it'll go away when I replace a new deck...or speaker..

I had a '93 accord coupe myself. I put 150k miles on that car. In the 5 yrs I owned it the egr valves clogged (cost me $100) and the distributor went out at 100k which was coverend under warranty. $100 in repairs for 5 yrs and 150,000 miles. I still miss her even though 3 years have passed. How many miles did yours have when you told her you needed something new and younger?

You must have some ultra-high standards to complain about your accord leaking oil or whatever after 8-9 yrs of service...sheeesshhh - I'm not even that bad.

Oh, I'm a cracka-american by the way. Yes, I love my japanese car(s). I almost want to hug you guys when I see you out and about. LOL

Seriously though, if us americans could actually make a decent car, I'd be a domestic fan. But since we can't even come close to a honda or toyota or nissan or...

Too many little annoyances.

1- Creaky clutch - something you would expect in a Yugo!
2- Rattles and more rattles.
3- Erratic fuel gauge - had it replaced - still erratic!
4- Paint on hood easily chips away.
5- Stock tires shot at around 35,000 miles - although they were not made by Honda - Honda chose to use them on the Civics.
6- Bouncy rear suspension.

If I had to do it over again I would have just waited a year or 2 for them to work out the bugs. Still seems like the later cars have problems. Honda could have done a much better job.

Although at 53,000 miles my 2K1 always gets me to where I'm going! But no more Civics ever again! I'll go with an Accord next time.

I think its overpriced but I still love it Wish it had just a little more power. Also thoes damm trunk springs are too high up to easily mount 6x9s so youd need to do the shocks like what Grey has listed Dropped my car an inch and a half and it handles like a champ now and after 16 months with 30,000 on the odometer i'm pretty content with the overall handling and comfort of my car.

Value 8/10
Handling 9/10 (After drop) Before drop 7/10
Power 6/10 Economy car.. lol Slow as hell but saves on gas
Asthetics 9/10
Incabin sound on freeway 8/10
Reliability/Maintainance 10/10
Interior 8/10
Cup Holders 10/10

ok i have to admitt that i have some of the problems you guys do with the rattling. it goes and comes back when it pleases in different weather too.

mbow, i think we just have high standards for our hondas you know? i am almost positive you may have some of these problems but really dont even pay attention to them. not to bash on you at all, i am letting you know. you have alot of experience with hondas, and maybe thats just why you dont worry about the petty things like we do

You're letting me know that I have problems in my car? I hope not since you have never been in it, let alone ridden in it. I don't know if that is what you meant or not.

I have noticed that I have another rattle around my sunroof on the passenger side I think. It's hard to hear exactly where it is coming from over the road noise.

I did recently hear some kind of ticking behind the steering wheel/instrument panel area while on the highway a few weeks ago. I haven't heard it since though.

My seat moves around now. It used to do it very rarely but now seems to do it alot.

My fuel gauge showed a 1/4 tank when I was on fumes one time. It's never acted up again and that was about 6 months ago I think.

Car didn't start for about 30secs one time. My 00 accord did the same thing 2-3 times over the year and half I owned it. I think this is due to the immobilizer key thing. I dont' know...

In the end, while none of these things should be happening, I really don't consider them 'problems', 'broken', or in need of repair.
I would be pissed if my a/c stopped working, my tranny started having problems, engine problems, cruise control breaking, etc.

I buy hondas and love honda because they get me from a to b day after day. I may not have the fastest, the greatest looking, or the plushest ride but I never worry about getting to where I am going or something breaking and needing repair. That's pretty much MY standard in a nutshell.

Hm I don't know if I'd go for the RSX...I wanted one extremely bad but I'm satisfied with my '02 LX CPE. The RSX's aren't as fast and choppy as they seem.. I know a few people who've had problems with them so they don't really 'live up' to how good their said to be.

i'm not overly satisfied with my car like a lot of people on this board, and was going to trade it in, but because honda is such a great company ( to me they are ) they offered me an extended warranty ( 10 year/100K mile ), which i took. i dont have a problem with my dealer, they treat me well when i come in.
i think if the dealer sucked, and if honda didn't give me a reason to keep the car, i would be driving another car, like a corolla, today.

rattles, lots of cars have them, plastic parts + more plastic parts = rattles, plain and simple. in cabin rattles will most likely NOT be fixed by the dealer, but other rattles, coming from like the engine compartment should get looked at.

EXACTLY!!!.... seems to me the civic's problems have been goin on globally for all honda civic around the world.. which i didnt have a chance to get noticed before i decided to bought one.
months after i bought the car... i get sooooo.. upset.. sooo.. disappointed!!! i feel civic sucks.. and regret for not choosing an ASTRA (my other choice). despite the weak power of the car, it seems to me that the car is dying! and tearing apart.

the problems of the car:
1. rattles one after another... from dash, door panels, pillars, glovebox, and somewhere, i have no clue, each time i switch off the engine.

2. squeaks, every morning.... yes .. every morning, as the car is driven down along my home's driveway.
squeaks all around the dash, pilars, and some other points simultaneously especially as i go through slightly rough or bumpy roads. again, i know.. this is not a mercedes benz... but as i compare to another class within the same class, such as Toyota corolla, subaru impreza, Astra holden/Optima..etc... these kindo of noises seems to be an alien noises they could hardly experiencing!

3. the brake... it's squeaks and creaks loudly everytime i release the brake!

still, there are heaps of problems that if i mention here.. u guys will puke upon your PC's monitor...

i've in and out from numbers of different Honda dealears... and most answer i got from them is.... well..
a. we couldnt identify the problems.. nothing went wrong.
b. well, we fixed it already.. now.. noises are no longer evident.

IN FACT, those are only complements!!! problems are around.. i was sooooooooooooo upset and disappointed with their workmanship.. they have no incentive at all in fixing or locating the problems...
the only alternative i got is .. to locate the problems myself..and pin point the problems myself everytime i visit the dealer and ask them to specifically do as i wish them to do....
seems to me that they are not the expert! and they know nothing about the civic's downside...

i am really sorry to write an long "essay".. but i am sooo upset...
mannnn, i am disgusted with civic

Yup, me too! No problems at all yet, aside from rattling in the past, which has since gone away. My fuel gauge is a bit inaccurate and my fuel mileage doesnt seem to be as good as it should be, but its not a big deal.
