weird noise when driving over puddle
well i got my magnaflow exhaust pipes welded together last week and its been raining hard. now when i drive over puddles i get this loud noise from my exhaust and a violent vibration which i can feel when my hand is on my shifter. my car doesn't die, after i put it in neutral and rev a couple of times, the noise and vibration goes away. thinking that water is getting into the pipes somehow i went back to the muffler place and the guy says that water couldn't be getting into the exhaust and that my bottom engine splash guard is missing and that water is getting on my O2 censor and thats the cause of my noise. well i can see the ground when looking down at my header so is my splash shield missing? is that even the cause of the noise? i also have a hairline crack on my dcsports header, could that be taking in water some how? any help would be great
thx!
thx!
i have the same problem,i have the magna-flow also, not sure what it is, im just thinking that it is water getting on top of the exaust, and doing a popcorn number, im not sure, i hope someone who knows about this will respond, id like to know also.....

I've been having that same problem for almost a year now. When you get an aftermarket exhaust, the shape of the B-pipe is different from the factory. Honda issued a TSB and was willing to replace the parts if your car was stock, but since you don't have an oem exhaust, they can't help you there.
Check out these 2 threads:
thread 1
thread 2
I don't know what I should do either. I thought about wrapping the pipes with exhaust wrap but i've never gotten around to it

the water is actually hitting the exhuast pipe, which leads to the violent reaction. The reason why you feel that reaction is that the pipe wasn't shapped correctly to compensate for the contact with the body of your car

i just sent this email to magnaflow, i suggest others with this exhaust and having this problem to do the same so we can get something done about this.
hi there, i'm a very satisfied customer of your catback exhaust and would like to raise a problem with your product on my car. i drive a honda 2001 civic ex coupe and there is an issue with the b-pipe vibrating and hitting against the car when driving over puddles in rain. this is a problem even the oem parts from honda had and a TSB was posted about it for an altered b-pipe replacement.
TSB: http://www.nhtsa.gov/TSBScans/sb631006-sb631014.pdf
well from what i've read on the message forums on 7thgencivic.com, the problem is in the shape of the b-pipe and when rapid cooling occurs, it creates a vibration. now i assume that the design of the b-pipe of your product is modelled after the previous non-altered version of honda's oem b-pipe? since honda will not fix it for me since i have an aftermarket exhaust, i hope your company will find a fix for this and let me know if any parts are in need for replacement. there are others i know with this very same problem with the magnaflow exhaust so i will let them know your reply. i hope you will keep good customer service/relations unlike (disappointing) honda.
thank you.

I have a Greddy Evo catback on my car and it does the same thing. I took it to honda just to see if they knew and they thought it had somthing to do with shocks.... but that doesn't explain why it only does it in the rain.... who knows...

i don't have any aftermarket exhaust manifold and mine makes a growing noise whenever i go through puddles. i talked to a honda guy and he said it could be a wheel bearing. i'm going to get my car checked out soon so i'll let you know what i find out.

again, the problem has been pin pointed to the b-pipe of some oem and most aftermarket exhaust systems, so what honda told you is crap

does this problem apply to 01 Civics only...or does the 02's have the same prob? on stock exhausts...not aftermarket
bought car in June of 2002..so basically it's a bad idea to get a cat back exhaust right as oppose to axle-back?

they shouldn't as long as you are having this problem. just goto the dealership on a rainy day and have one of the service technicians take a drive over a puddle with you.
Mine has no mods at all and have the same problem.
when travelling over a puddle of water, I notice that I loose power with noise. The more I press on the gas the louder it gets without gaining speed. The solution I found was to release the gas paddle and press slowly again. maybe to get rid of the water.
It feel like the engine or gear is loosing traction on the differential.

I also have a greddy evo exaust on my 2k1. I also get this problem and took my car back to honda. The tech drove my car and totally heard the sound as well. They took my car in but couldn't get it on the lift so they couldn't do much at all. I then brought it to my local shop and they say it's the midpipe hitting the top of my car. It's really anoying since I drive my car in the winter and even in the rain it continues to vibrate like crazy. I think I'm gonna write greddy an email about this and see if they know anything about it.

I never drive my car in the rain since I have a hatch back to drive too. Well, the other day I got caught in a storm and I had this same thing happen! WTF?!?!?! I thought I had a flat. I am going to get under there and check it out. I may have to try the heat wrap.

I have the TCS and it makes that sound too in the rain. At first I thought it was it hitting my sway bar, but now i don't know after all these posts.

I have an 01 civic and sometimes when I go through a rather large puddle it makes a "growning" sound or maybe more of a gear grinding sound... with a slight vibration in the stick shift. (lol no I'm not a bad gear shifter) If I downshift or let off the gas the sound eventually goes away. Anyone know if it happens in automatics, or does it seem to just be coming from 5-speeds? I live in Canada so it even happens if I drive through slush It could be a bearing thing on the inside of the wheel. I don't really think it is anything serious. So moral of this thread.. don't go through big puddles or large amounts of slush
My fiancee's exhaust does the same thing. He's got the Tanabe exhaust. We couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. Then we realized it was only doing it when it rains. We thought water was getting into the CAI. I hate the sound it makes because it feels like the car is just gonna die on the road. .....Alright, it's not that bad, but you guys know what I mean. lol

I am having the same problem, and that's exactly what I did. I took the service manager with me yesterday and he heard it. I have an appointment on Dec. 1st for them to fix it, so we'll see. I have to wait untill then , because it's the soonest they can give me a loaner. BTW I have a stock 2002 LX auto sedan.
