Am I slower than the rest?!

Hello.

I hear people bragging that they can get from 0-60 in an automatic in as little as 8 seconds. Edmunds.com even says an LX coupe (auto) can do it in 7.9 in their tests. I drive a 2002 LX auto coupe with 8000 miles on it. I've tested the 0-60 time and it always ends up being around 13 seconds. Granted my co-tester and I always use a primitive method (stopwatch), we still can't be off by 4 or 5 seconds! I've tried this many times. I've tried torque braking too. Does anyone have a suggestion? Does anyone know the problem? Please help. Oh, I've searched and no, there isn't a post on this topic already so don't give me any of that "hit the search button" ****, thanks .

People have gotten the 5 speeds to run 0-60 sprints like that. I ran a 7.9 on mine, but the autos are very lethargic. Unless you want to destroy your transmission doing neutral drops into 1st gear and running it out all the way to the limiter (I dunno if the auto will let you get there), it's not gonna run that quick. Plus you can shift by hand quite a bit faster than the torque converter will. Think of an automatic torque converter as your engine being attached to a rubber band which shifts the gears. Its smooth, but slow.
I don't think that it should be as long as 13 sec, but your stopwatch method has something to do with that. Use a Gtech to measure your 0-60 time, its very accurate when it's calibrated correctly. And get your "co-driver" out of the car. every 100 lbs costs you 0.1 Sec.

i have an auto and i dont know if its the way i drive but i have driven many fast cars that are autos i have learned to basicly make the car shift when you want, not waiting for it to shift, i pulled about 9.0 - 9.5 the 5 speeds have closer to the 8 secs. do you have any mods ? like a sterio system they add alot of weight, try it with out if you do... i agree fully with Boilermaker1 always do you runs with only you in the car, just like drag racing, even a school math book could make a diff... lol

Thanks for the replies. No, my car has nothing in it; I keep it very clean, but today I'll try testing the 0-60 with the co-tester out of the car.

Here are some real time numbers:

Car and Driver got 8.4 second 0-60 times out of a 5-speed 2001 EX coupe in their Nov. 2000 issue.

Consumer Reports got 10.1 second times out of an Auto 2001 EX sedan in their tests also.

Make your own conclusions, but 9.4-9.8 seconds for an EX Auto coupe seems about right.

And please remember, Civics are economy cars...sounding loud does not equal going fast. At the end of the day, 127 hp (or MAYBE 140 with bolt ons) is still 140 hp from a SOHC, high MPG, ULEV, economy car Civic.

My best is 10.7 sec on my auto LX Sedan (sedan=15lbs heavier, so thats about 0.015 sec i'm losing, right? ). All I have is my FIPK right now for upgrades, gonna put the Densos in on Monday.

I didn't really brake torque it. I hit the gas a micro second before i got off the brake. I also used the stopwatch method (see, you can do that with an auto very easily )

I do have a system in my trunk, probably about 80 lbs. The first time i timed myself i got like 12.5 or something. Roads were wet though, and I did brake torque that time. Best of luck to you.

And if you think you're slow, just remember this...

School bus fully loaded = 47.325 seconds
