It's normal due to the material they are made of...after getting all the rain water sprayed up on them and God knows what else, they're hardly going to stay new looking Perfectly normal.

That corrosion looks kinda severe. The previous year, I spent the entire fall, winter and spring in Ottawa Canada, where the winters are long and they use tons of salt on the roads, and my tie rods are nowhere near that bad. How bad are the winters where you are?

Do you live close to the Ocean? I live on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico, my Van which is not garaged, has the same corosion on it, its from the salt air. If you don't live near the water than maybe a car wash you went to had bad water, because most car washes recycle there water. Other than that i have no idea where you picked it up, but its NOT normal if you don't drive on salted roads, but it is definatly salt corrosion.

How many miles does your car have? Mine looks totally new and I have 14,000 miles. There's none of the stuff that you have on my tie rods... Doesn't appear to be a problem though, just a curiosity...

Don't worry about it though. Those tie rods are a special blend of metals in our civics. They're kinda corrosion proof. The stuff you see on them is probably nothing serious. Do you park in the garage? Do you have a swimming pool? Do you have chemicals for the swimming pool in the garage? I had a problem with fumes from pool chemicals (namely oxidizers) corroding tools in the garage once. Maybe it's something similiar?
