I have an EX sedan with an auto for almost two years now and the tranny works perfect. There are two common problems with auto trannies (not the civic but in general). Slipping between the speeds, when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd for example it doesn´t shift right away and takes a little time. The other problem (very common with ford contours) is a tranny that "kicks" really hard when shifting when upshifting and the problem is worse if you take your foot off the pedal to make while shifting.

In my experience, the civic´s aut trans is really good as long as you don´t abuse it it shouldnt give any problems, its really smooth.

A new car's tranny should be able to take SOME abuse.. a car should not have to be babied everyday to maintane reliability. We all have times when we need to pass really quickly, or simply have to be at a certain place quicker. As far as abusing goes, that to me, does not involve occusional aggressive driving. To me, it means overloading your car, or jamming it into "2" or "L" when you are doing 100km/h. Many cars out there take tons of abuse from their drivers, and still remain durable over the years. For a new car to have pre-mature slippage is totally unacceptable, especially considering it's working with a low torque engine.

As far as the signs of slippage.. I could tell you first hand, I had my tranny go on me less than a month ago. First you will notice rougher shifts, both up & down. Later on, it takes longer to shift.. before it broke, it wouldn't shift at all sometimes. Or when downshifting, it would rev like mad... and about a month prior to it finally going, it made a whiney noise.. thought it was from the engine.

Finally, I had a perminant check engine light come on....... dealership told me it was the O2 sensor.. yeah right. I found out the hard way that it was the shot tranny.. in middle of a f-ucking date.. it happened on the highway too. I wasn't too impressed with them..

Anyway, get it looked at as soon as you can. It's the best thing to do.

Honda's auto trannys are known for being a little noisy and shifting abruptly sometimes. It is completely normal for honda.

An auto is slipping when you feel it shift but takes a while to actually engage. Kinda like a manual in first gear and you let the clutch out very slow.

My wife's accord (v6) auto has 94k and still shifts as smooth as silk.

My 00 ex-vl shifted smoothly most of the time but did shift abruptly on occasion. That's just how honda trannys are.

My sister is on her 3rd civic with 2 prior auto civics driven close to 100k. Both mostly shifted smooth but abruptly from time to time. Still going strong when she got rid of them.

my friends tranny on her jeep busted... she couldnt get the car to drive on 'd' unless if she started from 1-2-d3-d4 or however her transmission goes... and one time she was going uphill and pushing the gas, smoke started to come out from under the car.

If you have an AT, change your ATF regularly. I recommend Amsoil ATF...you might want to look into an aftermarket ATF cooler also.
